CAST OF CHARACTERS

Me (Betsy, will be 37) SAHM to our DD, addicted to the DISboards, love planning vacations – especially ones to WDW. This will be my 7th time at WDW. I’m currently on Nutrisystem to rid myself of the baby weight (and let’s face it – the pre-baby weight). Intent on slimming down for our trip, as well as to keep up with a busy toddler! I’m the first Ginger (a redhead for those who are confused).

DH (Jon, 31 - yes, I robbed the cradle!) my beloved computer geek/programmer/gamer/musician husband. He loves going to Disney World (this will be his 5th trip), but doesn’t get too excited until the day before and doesn't pack or prepare until then. He half listens to me ramble on about the planning while playing World of Warcraft or strumming on one of his guitars. HOWEVER, he’s surprising me by reading our DD a Disney World for Kids book and help her learn the characters! He’s a Ginger in disguise – his hair has turned brown as he’s matured.

AubreeandDaddy.jpg

DD (Aubree, will be 2 when we go) our little red-headed princess who rules our house. I can’t wait to take her to my favorite place. Well, she’s been once before back in December 2005, but I was 8 weeks pregnant! She loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and My Friends Tigger & Pooh and names many of the characters already. My grooming her to be a WDW addict is working. :joker:

Aubree.jpg

DN (Barry, just turned 10) our youngest nephew. He is very excited, especially about visiting Animal Kingdom. He’s never ridden on a roller coaster – I don’t believe he’s ever been to a theme park. Usually has his nose in his Nintendo DS. A very intelligent, sweet, responsible child who we enjoy spending time with and who really loves our DD (and she loves him!). He’s not a ginger – he has very light blond hair – I think that makes him a toehead?

Barry.jpg

DG (Granny, aka Joyce, who will turn 71 while at WDW) my mother who hasn’t been to WDW since 1981 when it was just the Magic Kingdom and Epcot was still being built off in the distance. She doesn’t really get my enthusiasm for Disney World, but is happy to be going on vacation with her 2 youngest grandkids. She’s not a ginger either – more of a salt & pepper look going on!

When selecting the pics for this report, I found that there aren’t that many of the adults without Aubree in them, especially of me since I’m usually taking the pics! But at least this will give you an idea of who this crazy bunch is!

EDITED TO ADD: a little history...

DH and I have been to WDW a total of 4 times together. This year will be our 10th anniversary, so this trip really means a lot to us. I thought I'd include a few pics from our previous trips.

FIRST TRIP in November 2001
We stayed at the former Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Disney. While it was a cheap trip, we found out in 2003 that its truly magical staying onsite. First off, you'll notice DH was much heavier - we think he was over 350 lbs. He later went on a diet in 2002 and lost over 100 pounds - just reducing portions and lots of exercise.

2nd TRIP in October 2003

We stayed at Port Orleans Riverside and loved it.

3rd TRIP in November 2005
I was 8 weeks pregnant with DD - and during this trip I started experiencing major out-of-breath moments when walking to the bus stop from Epcot. I thought it was due to the cold weather. Little did I know!.

Castle.gif

During the last trimester of my pregnancy, I was having horrible breathing issues and couldn't lie flat at all, plus one of my legs was really swollen. My doctor thought it was typical pregnancy symptoms, but after delivering DD by emergency c-section, they found out my stomach & intestine had pushed up into my chest smashing my left lung. :scared1: I had actually been in congestive heart failure. My doctors believe my Charcot Marie Tooth disease (a form of Muscular Dystrophy) caused my diaphragm to weaken, allowing my uterus to push everything up. I had to be on oxygen for over a month then I still was having trouble breathing - which makes it hard to take care of a little one. Here's a pic of a jaundiced DD and I on our first day home after being in the hospital for almost a week.

4th TRIP in January 2007

I wanted to fully recover from the c-section then get the guts up to have corrective surgery. DH and I decided to go to WDW in late January 2007 since the previous year had been both exciting and difficult. I look at these pics and can see how bad I felt. We stayed at the Polynesian. Very nice but I was exhausted most of the trip. It's not good when you can't walk up a ramp to the monorail! That's when I decided to have the surgery.

IMG_8289.jpg

All is well now - I had the surgery in May 2007 and now I can breathe! I can lift DD without getting out of breath. So of course, we needed a do-over trip!

Here I am with friends at Downtown Disney in Sept. 2007 - feeling much better! Especially since I booked bounceback free dining!

Now I'm losing weight so this next trip will be better than ever!

RESORT (updated 5/12/08 after changing our resort from AKL)

:cheer2: We're staying at the Polynesian! Just changed us over and we're in a garden view room.

Here I am at the Polynesian back in January 2007. LOVED IT!

The theming is so cool!

I’ve reserved a full-size crib for DD from A Baby’s Best Friend. At home, she loves sleeping in her crib, and it’s so worth it for her to get her nap and sleep at night. The Polynesian's room size should give us more floor space for the crib, too. NOW CHANGED to using one of the Poly's cribs!

FLIGHTS

We're flying Northwest from Indianapolis to Orlando, non-stop. $257 per person - YIKES! :scared: Keeping my fingers crossed that the flight times won't change much - of course, I'd be pleasantly surprised if we could leave later in the day on our way home! I'm also counting down the days until we can request our seats - 90 days before departure! Seat requests - DONE!

I've purchased a CARES harness for DD's flights. We're also planning on taking several new small toys/activity stuff and a portable DVD player to keep her occupied.

Flight Times
Depart Indy at 8:15AM, arrive Orlando at 10:32AM
Depart Orlando at 11:30AM, arrive Indy at 1:57PM

GROUND TRANSPORTATION
Magical Express

SOME PRE-TRIP THINGS TO DO
(I'm sure this list will grow!)

  • Take dog to local pet resort the day before our trip
  • Arrange for friend to check in our cat while we're gone - we normally leave a couple bowls of food and several bowls of water, which our friend refills as needed, plus our cat will get some playtime.
  • Go the day before leaving to swap vehicles with DG (her SUV will hold all of us with DD's carseat and our luggage), and bring her and DN back with me so they can spend the night before at our house. My sister (DN's mother) is staying with my elderly father, who has diabetes and relies a lot on my mother.
  • Drive to the airport the morning of our flight to park onsite.

Am I excited about this trip? You betcha!

These are some things I've purchased for our trip - our first flight with a baby! :scared:

As mentioned above, the CARES flight safety harness (not my baby in the pic!)

to cart my princess around - a Maclaren Quest Mod Sport stroller

and this nifty organizer for the stroller

to gate check the stroller (I read about this item on the DIS!!)

and to keep DD wrangled, this cute monkey harness/leash (again, not my baby in the pic!)

:cool1: Wow! you have been doing your homework! I wanted to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge but budget would not allow it. I could not afford the dining option, but wanted to stay some where the entire family would be comfortable aka...hubby!!!! That is why I chose the Cabins at Fort Wilderness. We will cook all of our food... with 2 growing teenage boys there is noooooo way I would be able to feed all 5 of us with my budget.

keep it up..... I am in :coffee:

I am sorry, I have to laugh when I see this, we have this exact same one (monkey and all!)...I have tried and tried to use it (for the past 2 years), but every time I put it on my son he falls to the ground and rolls like a cat on a leash!!!!!:rotfl2: :rotfl: It is so funny...I hope you have better luck...a bit of advice, you might want to "break it in" well before the trip :thumbsup2

That is hilarious! You know, I put it on DD about a month ago and she let me walk her around a little bit, but I almost had a huge impulse to swing her around on it! JUST KIDDING!!! Your description of your son rolling on the floor is cracking me up. I will test it out big time to make sure she'll cooperate. Thank you for making my night with your post :rotfl2:

NOTE TO SELF: also keep trying to get DD to let me put the rain cover on the stroller so I can test that out before trying to hook it on during a downpour. She tried to kick me last time. :upsidedow

I have a tendency to buy "gadgets" that don't work with DD while other people have no problem. Case in point - the "walking wings" - when I tried using it on DD, she kept dropping to the floor. It was like walking around a puppet. Thank goodness for eBay! :rotfl:

That is so funny...never thought about it, but it kind of sounds fun!!! (just kidding!)

I figured out where I seen your post yesterday...on the Hoosier Dis Meet board...what part of Indiana are you from?

Live in Avon... born in Anderson, grew up in good ol' Lapel. Heard of it? :rotfl:

Yep, never been to Lapel, but I know where it is! We are close neighbors...I live in Greencastle, was born and raised in Linton (southern half of Indiana)...my great aunt lived in Anderson, been there many times.

The originator of the Hoosier dis meet also is in Avon (Sooze)...hopefully you are not one of those that had storm damage recently...my husband works for Duke Energy...he has some pictures that blow my mind!!

I'm so ready to meet everyone at the Hoosier DIS meet! Yep - we did have damage, but it was minor compared to others in our neighborhood. Thankfully the insurance money is in, but still waiting to get scheduled for the repairs. It's a pain!

This is OT, but here's a link to our damage if you're interested... it was quite the scary night. I was here by myself with the baby and our pets. My DH was on his way home and arrived right after the storm hit. I didn't even know the storm was coming until our weather alert radio went off. The best thing I ever bought! I am so thankful that we were all ok and our damage was minimal. Over 100 geese & ducks were thrown like missiles off the pond behind us into houses. My BIL in Lafayette is a hunter and saw these pics on a site he frequents. Our house is barely visible (we're not directly on the pond).

OK, back to the PTR...

Granny will be turning 71 on Sept. 2 and I'm planning on getting her a birthday button to wear.

I also need to work on making a laminated ID card for the stroller. Gives me a chance to be creative!

until next time...

Wow! You were very lucky...I feel very badly for everyone that got any sort of damage...I know it can sometimes be a nightmare getting everything repaired (and to your satisfaction)...my hubby has some pics of the poor ducks and geese...the one embedded in the side of the house is terrible (for the duck and the homeowner!)...kind of scary to think something like that can actually penetrate your house...:scared1:

Anyway, yes, I too am very excited to meet everyone...I just hope we are here...it is Easter weekend and we sometimes go to Toledo, Ohio for Easter to visit with family.

Now...back to our regularly scheduled program...your pre-trip report! :thumbsup2

:surfweb: We are booked at the POFQ for Aug 10th – 16th. For those who haven’t booked airfare yet (myself included) there is a website called kayak.com that checks all the airlines, then you can print the one you like best and then go book it yourself. A lot of people don't know this, but there's something called a "guaranteed airfare policy," where most airlines offer refunds or travel credits when fares drop below the price of a ticket purchased at an airline's Web site. Send yapta.com (stands for your amazing personal travel assistant) your itinerary and they'll tell you when there's a price drop. As long as you contact the airline while prices are at the lower level, you get the refund — in the form of credit — even if prices spike back up above your initial purchase price. I’m currently using both of these and they’re really cool.:surfweb:

Thanks for the info, Castaway Dave! Those are 2 neat sites! FYI, that yapta.com site doesn't list NWA, but I check it almost daily anyway. DH and I each received a credit of $121 on our last flight when prices dropped (my credit paid for my Sept. 2007 flight!!).

May I first say That I think you are a true insperation for all that you have been thru with the pregnancy troubles and them the surgery afterwards!
Also- you and your husband look great!!!!! Congrats on the weight loss!!

I was thinking of flying this time (out of Indianapolis), but I have never been on a plane before and Im Just a little, OKAY ALOT-scared of flyin. Plus I havent found any good rates (although Im not really sure what to look for since I have never had to look it up before) LOL.

Your DD has the most beautiful red hair!! That is the prettiest color ever! Shes a doll!
