Given the financial ups and downs we are experiencing, how will it affect your gift buying for this upcoming holiday season as well as for birthdays and other occassions? Will you spend less or buy more practical gifts? Or, will we see a trend towards just greeting cards that have thoughtful messages?

I'll probably give a little less this year than in years past. I'm just now beginning to think about it. Our kids are basically grown, one in college and the other a senior. They are happy with gift cards or money at this stage in their life. My husband and I will probably choose one gift that will count for the two of us.

As far as other family members go, the adults don't exchange gifts at Christmas or birthdays. We give to the little ones but don't spend a lot.
