Seems like gift cards are a popular item this Christmas. Are you planning on giving any gift cards this year? I plan on getting some restaurant gift cards like Outback, Famous Daves, Chilli's, movie cards etc... The ones I wanted to buy on restaurant.com are already sold out!! What gift cards are you getting this Christmas?

Kohls, Target, Wal-mart, Applebees, Texas Roadhouse, Speedway (gas station), McDonalds. These are the ones I have already gotten. I sure there will be more at the last minute.

I do not give gift cards to those I'm close to. I do give them to my DDs teachers.

I usually get them either Walmart gift cards (they have great Disney ones this year) or I buy them Amex gift checks that they can use anywhere for anything.

Oh yes. I need to get speedway gas cards too. Thanks for the reminder. Can't go wrong with gas cards now a days.

If you plan on giving gift cards, confirm with the store that the cards don't expire and don't lose value over time, 2 practices that have gotten very common. Some states have banned these practices but not all have. You don't want to give someone a card that you paid for and have them try and use it 6 months from now and learn it is worth much less than you paid.

The other really annoying feature is you must use the entire value - no cash back. I have several cards sitting around with under $1 left on them that I'll never use. The stores must make a fortune on stuff like that.

I used to give out gift cards at work but a few years ago I switched to good old cash. No strings attached. Accepted everywhere. Never expires.

The great thing about gift cards is I can pick them up at Kroger or CVS for all kinds of places (restaurants, Bed Bath & Beyond, Linen's & Things, movies, etc). I always keep an assortment of $20 and $25 gift cards on hand for births, weddings, graduations, etc of those folks that I'm not close to but a gift is expected.

I'll definitely be giving gift cards this year to extended relatives. Saves tons on shipping!

And of course, as the mother of teenagers, teenagers LOVE gift cards! And I like for people to give them that rather than cash or checks. Checks all go into their savings accounts. It's just a rule. And cash they end up spending on junk like candy and soda at school.
