We are taking our first trip to the GF in three weeks and we have reserved a Garden View Room. With a four year old, we would like to upgrade our room to a suite or to the concierge level. Of course, I know everyone wants to do this too but I thought it might be worth trying. How might I do this and also, any ideas on the cost difference? Thanks from a first time family visitor.

Jaybo, welcome to the Dis! The GF is my husband's favorite resort.

If you want to upgrade, contact Disney right now and do so. You can attempt to upgrade at check-in, but the room that you want might not be available, especially the suite. I have stayed in many suites at WDW and have not always been able to book what I wanted months & months in advance. During my last suite stay at the Grand Floridian, the two-bedroom suite was not available for our entire stay so I opted for a one-bedroom suite and a concierge room for those missing nights (and this was during a slow season -- October). Then I changed my mind about two weeks prior to vacation and booked a two-bedroom suite over at the Yacht Club for our last few days (I really wanted my entire party together in one suite). We began our vacation in a two-bedroom suite at the Grand Floridian and ended it in a two-bedroom suite at the Yacht Club. My sister & her kids loved resort hopping with us, so it was a perfect compromise for our vacation.

If you wait until check-in to upgrade to a suite, it will be as expensive as booking it is right now. Disney does not discount suites (and it is extremely rare for anyone to be comp'ed into one).

Have a magical stay at the Grand Floridian. My family will be there soon, too. :D

Welcome to the DIS! :sunny:

I think it depends on how you booked the room originally. If you booked through WDW directly, you can call them & explain what you'd like to do...You might want to get guest services to help you with this one. ;)

If you booked through a travel agency, you might have to go through that travel agency.

I think you should read the info you got when you booked to see what the policies are...change fees, etc, *before* you call anyone. You might have a good chance of fees being waived if you are paying to upgrade though. Of course, all this would depend on availability.

You might want to think this through a bit before you do anything. I don't know if this matters to you, but I think you'll see a noticeable difference in the price. You might want to take a look at the photos &/or diagrams of the rooms & suites on the 'net before you change.

Hope this helps. Best of luck! :)
