Just an FYI on the items sold inside the Gingergread house at the GF.

After seeing how it's made on the food channel I desperately wanted one of the mini gingerbread house and had even prepared my family with the fact that we would be carrying it on the plane. I get in line with lots of excitement waiting to get my hands on a piece of gingerbread shingle and a mini house. The woman infront of me hands me a pamplet with price and honestly I stopped dead in my tracks!!!

The mini Gingerbread houses - $65 - that's right shoppers it's truely a small downpayment on a house.

The shingles are $6 which was a little easier to stomach - but we still didn't purchase any.

I understand we're at disney and everything, but the prices for the items inside the house made it obvious to me that there were trying to find a way to pay for the increase in the mortgage for the house. It's nice to look at, but we passed on taking any samples home.

Boardwalk Bakery had houses for sale and I believe that they were $25. I found the prices at GF out of line.

WOW! My DD has her heart set on getting a Gingerbread House for our room -- looks like we will be heading to the Boardwalk Bakery instead of the lobby!

I couldn't believe the prices either. I did get a pin, but no treats.

We went there yesterday, but nixed the house due to price and transportation concerns. There was some Signature Chocolate thingy that costs $75!

We did get two pins, some shingles for us and some snowflakes as bribes for our kids' teachers. :teeth:

I ate mine last night, and was surprised it wasn't crunchier. In fact, I had to bite and tear it, like I was eating a turkey leg in Frontierland or something. We've done it now, there's no real reason to go back.

i went 2 days ago and they do like a demonstration at 1pm on how they make the smaller houses and when they did they gave out lots of little samples of gingerbread/chocolate peices and chocolate covered mickey marshmallows, there werent very many people there so they gave out several peices to each guest and also they gave out roasted chesnuts. so just a heads up if you just want to taste a little and not buy a whole peice.

We were there last year when they did this one day and quiet frankly, I was disappointed in the piece of shingle I had. As I recall it was very bland. Not sweet or particularly gingery at all. We bought ginger bread ornaments, but that was it.

DS had his heart set on a gingerbread house as well. I went in with him on it. We carried it back on the plane--it's a huge box. Unfortunately, some of the icing broke off. I think I can repair it, but I've got to make the Michael's run for some royal icing.

They only make 3000 gingerbread houses at the GF, so they could be nearly sold out, too. When we were there for Thanksgiving week, they already had 800 on sale with many of them sold already. We bought one.

We did one at my daughters school this week - it was easy, fun and came out nice. It was free. If you bought the stuff, it would have cost about $10 max.

I would never spend that kind of money on something like that. I hope that you really liked it Deb...or, er...Bill. ;)

It's really nice. We've been sampling it over the past few days. It's got lots of cute touches that I hadn't noticed at first. We couldn't decide at first if we wanted to save it somehow or chow down on it. We've decided to eat it starting Christmas Day.

We thought the price was out of line too. Especially since Raven says that you can take one of these babies home with you for $25. I think that episode has been around for a couple of years though, but still a $40 price hike is a bit more than inflation. I wish I had knew about the Boardwalk Bakery selling them for less, I would have attempted to carry one home.

I make dozens of gb houses every year....you don't go to Michael's for royal frosting, you have to make it yourself. What you can buy at Michael's is the meringue powder if you prefer not to use raw egg whites (I prefer the egg whites but I buy the ones that are pasturized in the shell). The proportion is 2 egg whites to 3 cups powdered sugar...add the sugar a cup at a time using your mixer to beat it, then keep it in a airtight container until you are using it. You can also buy a pastry bag, coupler and tip if you want to make the repair a little prettier.

I thought the prices were high but not any worse than what the catalogs (ie. Williams Sonoma) are charging for a pre-made house. Really, make your own! It's so much fun and you can usually do a better job than those mass produced ones. If you don't want the hassle of rolling and baking the dough just purchase a kit that has the pieces already in it....only about $10. most places.

Have fun! :sunny:

Yeah, I know meringue powder--I make them every year too. DS saw the show on the telly and wanted to buy one this year. I've never bought one before, and I have admit, getting out of making one this year was rather appealing.

BTW the ones at the Boardwalk Bakery are not the same as the ones at the GF. I'll take a picture of ours and post it.

This is the side that has damage. Fortunately, it all came off in one piece, and I think it will be easily repaired.

If you're flying, don't buy it--it was a huge hassle.

I just bought one at YC/BC for $35. I forgot I could get one at the Boardwalk Bakery for only $25!!! Duh. Anyway...the ones at the GF are larger than those at the resorts. Even if I wanted to spend the $65 for one at the GF I wouldn't be able to get it home....just too big. But the YC/BC one fit very nicely under the seat on the plane. My family loves it...a huge surprise for them.
The gingerbread isn't like what we here in the USA normally think of gingerbread as. We have had it more spicey/sweet. I find this gingerbread to be more European....more 'bread-like' actually. But I believe it is more authentic like this. With the chocolate on the back of the shingles it's really pretty nice to eat. Just more fluffy then we're used to.

Our first Christmas in WDW I wanted a shingle from the Gingerbread house in GF. It was horrible! Waste of money. They best gingerbread are the men shaped ones on Main Street, DTD Goofy's Candy or MGM in the bakery.

Can you buy the shingles at the Boardwalk and do they count as a snack on the meal plan.

You guys aren't giving them great reviews but I still want to try one and so does my 6 year old. We might buy one to share - if we like it, we can buy more.
