As a belated 12th anniversary present to each other Darlene and I booked a Vero Beach getaway August 22-26th after the kids have been back at school for a week.

Transportation:
We got a great "Ding" rate of $98 RT from Indy to Orlando on Southwest. Another great rate of $80 for a rental Ford Focus from L&M for the week. Our flight out of Indy was delayed but otherwise transportation was seamless.

Lodging:
We first drove from Orlando to Ft. Lauderdale over the weekend to visit my Sister/Brother in Law and spend a day of continuing education. We were made to feel at home and would be happy to give you their phone # if you would like to stay sometime. (Only kidding).

Disney's resort was beautiful despite some continuing recovery after last years hurricanes. It was themed in detail down to sea turtle markings on the lobby's hardwood floor. We got an ocean view room on the 3rd floor and enjoyed many sun/moonrises, and star gazings from the balcony.

>>>Gotta get kids ready for school, will continue later.

OK, I'm Back.

Dining:
We ate out every meal in Ft. Lauderdale so I ended up doing a lot of cooking at Vero including crab legs, seafood pasta, shrimp cocktail, and nacho's. We had dinner after Cirque du Solei at House of Blues and Enjoyed a flat bread pizza at the Green Cabin while watching Katrina churn up the sea.

Activities:
We bought boogie boards along with our groceries at Publix and enjoyed hours of body surfing except for the times when we were just getting pummeled . We had planned on a day at Typhoon Lagoon but opted to stick with God's water park instead. On Tuesday we went to the DVC block party before Cirque du Solei. The show was awesome, just how many times in an evening can you witness the impossible right before your eyes? After dinner at HOB I did the Adventurers Club while Darlene shopped Downtown Disney. We met back at the comedy club for some laughs before driving back to Vero. On Wednesday we rented beach lounge chairs with an umbrella and spent the entire day by the sea surfing, resting, and promising each other that we woud do this again. Thursday we were in awe of the high sea's (15 foot swells reported) that Katrina was sharing with us. The locals were having a blast surfing but our boogie boards stayed dry this day.

Relieved Anxieties:

Darlene could not find her drivers license Friday morning before we flew out. We were sick thinking that she might not be able to get past security to fly home. Fortunately she was allowed on the plane after having to go through some additional security measures. We just got a call from the resort last night, they had just found it in our room and it is already in the mail.

We were blessed with answered prayer that we would be safe and be able to see our kids on time Friday night despite the hurricane landfall. Though safe and sound, I believe that having been in the wake of Katrina more deeply connected us with those that are now suffering on and around the Gulf .
