I had my fitting date booked for November next year but I'm really worried about the state of the economy so I've told my bridal shop we have bought the wedding forward to this year and now have my fitting in November this year.

I heard a horror story about a girl that went to get her dress a few days before the wedding and the shop had gone bust so she had to get another. I really don't fancy doing that!

Anyone else worried about a bridal shop storing/holding their dress?

This actually happens with alarming regularity no matter what the economy is like. Apparently the bridal shop biz is a tough one, and for years there have been stories about them going out of business and stranding brides. :scared1: If you've already paid for the dress, I say take it home now and then have it fitted later. You can always go to another shop or an independent tailor to have it done.

I picked mine up a year early, i got a cotton breathable bag and it hung in fmil bedroom

I agree with Carrie. I would take the dress home and what until closer to the wedding to do your alterations.

I agree I will be picking up my dress tomorrow and will be holding for 11 months, I am bringing it to a tailor as the time gets closer. Another reason is plan to loose little weight before the wedding. I don't want to get it altered and have to do it again.

I purchased my dress last month and am glad that I did. I wanted to make sure that I had enough time to get it in and have any alterations done. Plus I knew it's a significant purchase and wanted it to be one less bill we'd have to worry about once time came around to put down some serious deposits on other stuff. I'm gonna store it in a breathable bag in our sewing room closet away from the sun and anything else that might harm it.

I too am putting down a deposit on my dress and ordering it early, plus this month its 100 off so that helps. My question is the size. I am in between two sizes and I am wondering if I will be ok to order the size smaller since I have already started to lose weight.

i took mine home months before my fitting..i ordered a 16 but lost a lot of weight between the order and 6 weeks before the cruise. I ended up finding a seamstress closer to my home too and she was amazing and much cheaper than the bridal shop
I just kept it in the bridal bag and the seamstress cleaned it after she was done so it was nice and fresh!

i wish i had ordered a smaller size, but I was told they can take in 2 sizes but only let out 1...even though when I ordered it, I had lost 50lbs, I was afraid if something happened, I would gain and not fit..
NOT trying to say you would gain..it is just something to think about! ( I ended up having surgery 1 month before my order and I was afraid I wouldn't heal quick

I am getting married in Jan, and purchased my dress in Feb of this year, So 11 months ahead of time, and now am having to purchase another dress because I gained more weight that I ever imagined I would (I work out, eat right, dont smoke, etc, the dr said its my BC) anyways, I dont fit into my dress.
You could buy early, or you could wait and get it from a shop thats been around awhile that you can trust wont be going out of business. :flower3:
Not that I am against it, just had a bad experiance with it myself.

I actually work in a bridal shop.. and you just have to make sure that you can trust them. We had a local bridal shop go under recently and stole money from girls, passed previous brides' dresses off as new to to others, etc. It was awful! But, most decent people out there would call you to come get your dress if something were to happen. We have some dresses stored in the back for 2 years! I think you'll be fine leaving it at the store if that's what you decide to do.
