My iPod has a lot of music on it. My old laptop, which has all of that music on it, died several months ago. I now have it all ONLY on my iPod but I can't for the life of me figure out how to move that music to a new computer. Help me!

I had this problem when my computer died and i wanted to load all of my ipod contents onto my new computer. iTunes will want to reformat your iPod and erase everything there and force you to start over. The only solution I could find was to buy some software that would copy the songs off of the ipod and load them into iTunes. Then it would reinstall the songs back on the iPod again and everything was in sync. I used a program call CopyTrans. I think it was around $20. I figured it was cheaper than trying to manually try to rip and reload thousands of songs. Good luck!

Sounds like that is something I might have to do.

I tried connecting the iPod to the laptop before installing iTunes to possibly have it see it as an external memory, w hich it did, however it wouldn't let me get the songs from it.

I will give the program a try. No way do I want to burn every CD I own again!

If you purchased the music from iTunes you can get it all on to your new computer for free, and it's easy. You have to "authorize" the new computer to your iTunes username (under store). You can authorize 5 computers to that username, I myself have 4 already. This means that any computer you hve authorized you can access all the music, videos, apps, etc. that you have paid for. However if you downloaded the songs from somewhere else, you can't get them back. This happened to me. Also if this doesn't work for you or if you want more help, you can write to Apple, they're very helpful. Goodluck :)

This only works if you have your library on another hard drive to move to a new computer. The OP's only source is her Ipod. Apple makes it so you cannot easily move songs from your Ipod onto your computer.

OP, just google to find out what programs are out there. When my laptop died last fall I was able to find a free program to get the songs I hadnt backed up yet before the crash.

If you have bought all the songs from iTunes all you have to do is...

1. install iTunes
2. plug in your ipod
3. go into file on iTunes
4. click transfer purchases from ipod

All your songs should then transfer from your iPod to your computer no problem. This only works if all the songs have been purchased from iTunes though. If they were not I don't know...
Good luck! iTunes is frustrating sometimes! :)

No songs were purchased from iTunes.

I will try all of the suggestions and hopefully one of them will work.

I also used CopyTrans after my external HDD died and took my entire library with it. I think I got the "suite" version so that I could also salvage the photos that I had on my iPhone. It worked quite well and was very easy to use. IIRC, they do have a trial version out there that does most of what the full version does; it just limits the number of files you can copy. But it's nice to be able to try the software out first to see if it's crap or not. :)

Google "sharepod"

This is a program that will download all of your IPOD music to a computer and then you can point to that place from within Itunes to upload to a new version of itunes.

It is pretty simple to do.

I watched a young friend of the family go through this a couple of years ago. Eventually he just gave up and let the cursed thing reformat itself and started over. SOOO frustrating. It was at that point that I vowed to NEVER own any sort of MP3 player that forced me to use dedicated software like iTunes (shudders) or wouldn't let me use a drag-n-drop or copy-n-paste system of adding or removing files.

I feel for you, OP, and hope you can make it work out. I have no timely suggestions, just hugs  and an overwhelming sense of relief that it's NOT me.

Good luck!

Not true. her EXACT scenario happened to me and I was able to authorize my new computer so the songs would transfer from the iPod without being deleted. Although now that I know they weren't purchased, it doesn't matter.

One way that I know works to copy music from an iPod to a PC without special software or techniques.

1. Open up your iPod window from Explorer. (Right click on appropriate drive letter and select explore.)
2. Under the tools menu select Folder Options.
3. Under the view tab, select show hidden files and folders. This will allow you to see the folders on the iPod that hold all of your music.
4. You can then copy the folders from your iPod to you computer. The only thing is that all of the files will not be what they are named on the iPod, but they will correct themselves once you import the folder to iTunes.

Hope this works for you.

I did it several years ago, with an Ipod Mini, without any software. It had something to do with using the Ipod as a hard drive and I pulled the music off and then imported it. Have you tried googling that question? I am sure you will get a lot of answers there.

Can anyone help with this problem, I brought an ipod classic 160gb tried to copy my ipod games, the older games monopoly and yatzi copied from itunes to the ipod, the newer games bejeweled mahjong and royal solitare did not.

Sharepod worked like a dream! All of my music is back on my computer. YAY! Now I can add my new CD's to my iPod.
