Getting from JFK to Manhattan

HELP!! I have always either driven in or taken the subway. Mom and I are going on a spur of the moment trip and I leave in the a.m. How do I get from the airport to Manhattan?

Cab fare standard $45 from JFK to anywhere in the city.

I can't offer advice since I've never been to Manhattan, so I'll just bump this back to page one for you.

Supershuttle is cheaper than a cab.

There is a new service called AIRTRAIN that will take you to the subway or even better to the Long Island Railroad station in Jamaica. From there, trains leave every 15 minutes or so to Penn Station in Midtown.
A cab is cheaper if there are more than three in your group, but it will take a lot longer.

Yeah, it's way cheaper if you don't mind taking 2 hours to get to midtown.

DW and I usually book a towncar service. It runs us about $100 (fare, tax, tips, tolls included) but it's private, door to door, and quick. There are all kinds of them on the internet. I've used Gotham and Manhattan Coach without problems.

Thanks everyone! I am outta here in about 10 minutes. If my mom and I can manage to get to JFK at the same time, we will take airtrain and LIR, if not we will probably do taxis because she doesn't know her way around AT ALL and I will not get in untili 10:30 and not taking subway alone. I just wanted to thank you guys for your help. Our trip was a blast and airtrain and LIRR was easy to use. Luckily I have ridden on the LIRR before so I was familary with it. It was only about $10 a piece to get in the city. Thanks again!
