Getting Electronics Through Airport Security?

Specifically a laptop, plug and mouse, a Garmin and it's wires and wifey's Halter monitor. She doesn't need to wear it unless she gets symptoms of tachycardia which, seemingly, were fixed for good by a procedure last week. Stuff in clear plastic bags or out? Suggestions?

Laptop needs to be taken out and placed in a bin.
The rest stays in the carry on but have it easily accessible in case they decide they want to physically look at it.

Anything the TSA does not recognize through the scanner will be more closely examined and probably swabbed for explosives. My wife travels with a nebulizer and gets secondary exams all the time with it.

As of a few days ago any electronic larger than a cell phone has to come out of your carry-on.

Laptops must come out of your bags, unless you have TSA Precheck. Other electronics CAN stay in your bag (ipads, Kindles, phones, cameras, etc) unless a TSA agent wants to examine them more closely. It's convenient to have all your cords, etc in one place, so they can be taken out quickly if needed.

Not anymore. That changed two days ago. Now anything larger than a cell phone must go into a bin. As does all foodstuffs.

We have always carried our laptops in cases that fully open 180 degrees. We simply open them up exposing everything. and ran them through the scanner. Do I now have to remove the laptop?

I was under the impression this was only for flights originating outside the US

That's nothing..... I carry with far more electronics (cameras, GPS, backup equipment, partner's equipment).
  • Once the laptop is in a separate bin.... just them scan everything else.
  • do show up an extra 15 minutes or earlier in case there are delays
  • they won't ask you to power everything up.... but they will swab for explosives to assess you for the VIP secondary experience.

Not anymore. I had read about it before I flew last week and encountered it Tuesday.

There was an article about it in the Orlando paper too.

When I evacuated from Hurricane Irma, I was legitimately concerned that my apartment might not be there after the storm. I basically had an entire carry-on bag that was filled with laptops, tablets, 10 external hard drives, random electronics, and their respective cords. Anything of value that was portable and electronic was in that suitcase. TSA didn't seem to mind.

But, I do agree that adding an extra 15-20 minutes to your arrival time at the airport is a smart plan...just in case.

Thank goodness I have PreCheck. Getting more and more worth it

I'm with you! On our upcoming trip my husband and I have it, can bring our daughter through with us, but neither of my parents are signed up. They only travel about two or three times via air each year though so I don't know if it's worth it to ask them to sign up.

At $85 for 5 years, it's worth it in my opinion. Now, $85 a year that would be very different

I did global entry for the extra 15 dollars, which maybe I can sell my parents on since they usually do a European trip once a year. :)

You are right about that. We also had to pull any sort of food out of our carry-ons. Gum, mints, my sister had a couple of apples that they took out of the bag and threw loose into a bin. :scared:
