Getting a rental car the 1st day...how do we get to our hotel?

We're going to be renting a car and visiting dh's grandmother in Lakeland, FL the 1st day we arrive. We'll just rent from the airport. Anyone know how we can then get to our hotel at VWL? Would we still be able to ride DME even if we don't board directly after our flight? How often does the DME run? Should we bring our luggage with us on our rental car or just have DME take them initially and catch up with our luggage later when we get back from our visit?

Are there any rental car places that are close to the Disney property (within walking distance)?

I know a lot of questions, but any help would be great appreciated!!! Thanks!

Uh, couldn't you just drive the rental car to your hotel?

Should we bring our luggage with us on our rental car or just have DME take them initially and catch up with our luggage later when we get back from our visit?

You cannot use DME as a luggage-hauling service. They will not transport your luggage unless you ride as a passenger.

Depending on rental car company your using, I would just drive to your hotel check in and then return the rental car. Keep your luggage with you. In order to use DME you have to be with your luggage. Alamo & National both have rental car locations on property. They will shuttle you where you need to go as well. Some of the Downtown Disney hotels (somewhere on DISboards.com you will find that info) have rental car company's as well so you could return to one of them.

Thanks tkldisney--that's what I wanted to know...if there was any shuttle that would take us back to the hotel. I don't want to keep the rental car, we just want it for a 5hr trip to see dh's grandmother. But I didn't know how we'd get to and from the hotel without the car. Thanks! I will look into Alamo and National!
