Getting a Loose Diamond Set?

Has anybody been to a ring show where they set your stone so you could see it? Aaron and I are going to one next month. My mom is giving us a diamond and there is a store nearby that is going to have a few thousand empty settings. They said they will put it in the settings and let us see what it looks like. I really like the idea. Has anybody done this before? Any tips?

I changed the title and am expanding the question a bit. Has anybody here had a diamond from another piece of jewelry set into their e-ring? Do you have any tips for those looking to go this route?

I did something similar. My diamond was my Grandmother's. We went to a local jewelry store and found a setting i liked. They said that we could pretty much put my diamond on any setting that fit the diamond. They can put any diamond on most settings. We just had to pay for the head that holds the diamond but they soldered it right on to the setting and placed my diamond in it. HTH
