German food

I stole someone's idea on that I saw on here this summer, and I'm starting an "international night" at my house each week. For our first country, my son chose Germany (I think mainly because of the meal we had at Biergarten this summer). I think I'll make some kind of schnitzel or sauerbraten for the meat, but I'm undecided about sides. Anybody have any suggestions for easy German side dishes?

Hot German potato salad good. You can often find spatzel in the int'l section at the grocery store. We lived in the country, so about any fresh veggie was fair game as a side.

And brotchen (the crusty rolls- they're labelled French bread rolls at our grocery store. Not exact, but right idea.)

Kraut balls are delicious, as well. I make them for parties sometimes, they usually go over really well.

Depends on which main dish you choose. With sauerbraten, I'd go with spaetzle.

Speaking of sauerbraten, if you want to cut the cooking time, try the meatball version.

According to DH's family, no German meal is complete without cabbage in some form.

I also agree with the German Potato Salad. Yep - it has to be HOT!

another vote for spatzle--it is my son's favourite

We would not actually serve preztles as a side dish here (we tend to eat them as a snack or at breakfast) but you could serve soft pretzles as a bread (or hte crusty rolls "brochten).

You would be surprised by how ant things coe served with "pommes" (french fries)--dip tehm in a mixture of ketchup and mayonaise.

I know everyone has already said it, but warm potato salad! I had it for the first time this past summer at a church BBQ. I went back to get tons and tons more. I skipped all the meat and just ate that.

I think this is also a sign to ask my aunt for the recipe! She was the one who made it and just YESTERDAY I was asking my mom if she thought my aunt (her sister) would have it written down (she's a great cook so she does a lot of things by taste).

Traditional German. Kinda hard to prepare properly and if cooked too quick you'll basically make a onion/bacon stuffed football. But if cooked properly...YUMMY

I was just going to say that! My very German grandma makes this all the time. Along with homemade spatezl. (I can never spell that). Very very yummy.
