We usually fly but this August we are thinking of driving. Years ago the 2x we drove to WDW from RI we went by the Tappen Zee to the Garden State Pkwy. This time we'll be leaving at 12:00 AM on a Friday and was wondering 2 things.

1) Will we be fine traffic wise between 2 & 3 in the AM going via the GW Bridge?

2) How much time would going the GW save as compared to the Tappen Zee?

Thanks in advance for any help.

the best advice is listen to am 1010 and am880. It depends on construction, etc.

At that hour in the morning, the GWB should be good! You will save about 30 minutes using GWB.

As noted, you can save about 30 minutes on the GWB but construction, which is often done overnight in the summer, or an accident can put a crimp in things. Definitely check traffic reports as you get closer and decide between Tappan Zee and GWB as you approach.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Hopefully the traffic will be light on the GWB, saving 30 minutes on a 19 hour drive would be helpful.

If you have a smartphone, use Waze or Google Maps with traffic to check the route before you commit. Both have pretty good up to date traffic conditions.

The GWB should be good to go at that time, they usually shut down one of the decks at night so that could be an issue.

I don't take it anymore. The Cross Bronx is in terrible shape. I now take the Tappan Zee all the time. It may be a bit longer but it's almost never backed up and at 3am, the GSP and the Tappan Zee should be normal highway speeds. I think the tolls going the Tappan Zee / GSP are way less than the GWB / Jersey turnpike. Southbound, there are no tolls on either bridge but the GSP is cheaper than the turnpike to exit 11a.
