Has anybody read his series? I think one of the books is A Feast of Crows or something like that.

I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings book so somebody suggested that I might like Martin's fantasy series. Any opinions?

Love Love LOVE his books!! The series is called A Song of Ice and Fire, "A Game of Thrones" is the first in the series.

I'm also a big fan of LOTR, and only started reading other fantasy series after I got hooked by LOTR. This series is one of my favorites that I've discovered so far. Another series which I'm hooked on is The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, first book in series is "The Eye of the World". This series is very interesting because of the strong focus on women characters in it.

The only drawback I have with either of the above series is that neither is finished and it takes FOREVER for the authors to release the next books. Even so, I would highly recommend both of them to you, enjoy! :thumbsup2

They are great books! They are very graphic though, full of violence and err, adult situations to put it nicely.
They are very well written, detailed, and full of suspense and definitely not a light or easy read. It's a whole entire world. And realistic. They are not books centered on the 'good guys' and them always winning.

I like the Wheel of Time series too. They do tend to drag on a little though, and the author recently died, so no clue if the last books is going to come out. :(

Oh no! I had not heard that Robert Jordan died :sad1: I did find info on Wikipedia that he dictated much of the last books storylines to family and friends before he passed with the understanding the "other writers" would complete the final volume. I certainly hope they do, and not leave his most prolific life's work unfinished....

I think I'm going to ask for these books as my stocking stuffers. It's good to hear that Jordan told his family about the last book because I never picked up the first Wheel of Time book after I heard he had passed.

Knew I'd find you here, Ny. ;)

Great series! Get "A Game of Thrones" and start reading. They are a little graphic in spots, but nothing that doesn't relate to the storyline. Very indept, the only problem is waiting for the next book to come out.

And the crazy people on another forum who used to have a strange guild about the series.

Hmm, good idea Sir Ron, they would make great stocking stuffers. I have a couple I'm missing, I can add them to my list! Glad to help convert someone to this great series. :)

I'm predictable. I saw this thread and jumped on it all excited. :rotfl:
And hey, I resemble that last remark. :rolleyes1

I had heard he left outlines, but not that he had left most of the story. That gives me hope for the last one. :)

Sorry I missed this thread a couple of years ago... I'd have posted pointers to updates on the Wheel of Time issues, here, earlier.

Anyway, back to George R. R. Martin... As you may know, HBO has optioned Game of Thrones. Apparently, filming is now set to begin in October. They just added New Amsterdam star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to the cast.

His books are ok, but very very more adult oriented then LOTR series.

Be warned. Lots of graphic sex, violence and whatnot..

I gave up because he is taking years and years to get the next book out. His writing is not worth that long of a wait.

When/if ever done, I will go back and start again as long as I know I can get them all at once and read them

I'm of the same opinion. I personally think he's lost interest in the series, because he seems to be able to finish all the other books he's been writing. Too bad, I really enjoyed them.

I really like the George R.R. Martin books. The 'good' guys aren't nauseatingly good and the 'bad' guys aren't all completely evil. There's a lot of grey in his writing and character development and I think it makes the series feel more fleshed out and interesting.

I've been reading the WoT books since the first one was released so I'm really looking forward to getting the last few books in the series. I figure at this point I've stuck around for the first 10+ might as well finish it out.
