General DVC Rent/Transfer Opinion

Wanted to gain different opinions from current DVC members.

When looking to rent or transfer your points to other Disney-fanatics, what % of you are looking to gain a profit? Or are you more likely to want to break even and you gain more enjoyment by providing another family a Disney experience.

I have been working with an incredible DVC member who has been a DVC owner for 15 plus years. We typically settle between $10 to $12 per point to transfer/rent for my Disney trips. This is incredible as the boards suggest $15 to $17 is the norm and rental websites may be even higher.

Since I am not a DVC owner, I am curious if there are others out there.

'Break even' is a huge variable since some members who purchased years ago paid far less than those buying today even though the dues are the same. The member you have been working with has certainly treated you very fairly.

For many years, rental rates were rarely above $10 per point. In recent years with DVC charging more for One-Time-Use points, rental brokers charging more for rentals and paying DVC members $13.50 - $14 per point a floor may have been set for rental prices. The ceiling has not likely yet been established.

Those charging less can often find their points being sought after more so than those charging more. Those owning small but popular resorts are often able to command higher prices for obvious reasons.

Since you are not a DVC Member, you have never been able to have the benefit of a transfer since that may only be done between DVC Members.

You have certainly had the benefit of knowing a very reasonably priced member.

$10-$12 per point is very cheap, IMO. Many owners would not break even at those prices when you factor in membership fees/dues (CCV was $7.43 per point in 2019), higher buy-in costs for some of the newer resorts (CCV is selling for $188/point, that’s equal to $3.84 per point over the next 49 years) -we’re already at $11.47 per point without considering the opportunity cost of the money “invested” in DVC instead of somewhere profitable.

If I rent to friends or family, I only ask that they cover my dues for the points they need. For anyone else, I’m not giving my points away for so little just to give a stranger a pixie dust moment. Renting points is a business deal and that’s how I treat it. Yes, business can be accomplished in a friendly way but I don’t owe anyone a cheap vacation.

Remember that points themselves are of no value if there are no villas available to book. Almost all of the "cheap" points you see advertised are for points that expire soon. It is EXTREMELY difficult to find available rooms when you are looking only 2 - 3 months in advance.

OP - the Member you work with is extreme.y generous. He/She could undoubtedly get several dollars more per point than you are being charged.

I'm not a travel agent. I don't rent out my points and we tend to use them all every year. I don't want to plan another family's vacation. I see many members renting out their points for $18 or more a point. Especially if they have spec reservations around F&W or the holidays or a RunDisney event.
