Gene has Lyme Disease. UPDATE: pg. 3

Apparently, he's had it for a while. His knee all of a sudden swelled up and they ran some blood tests. All the markers for Lyme Disease are positive.

I haven't told him, yet.

The problem is that he's on some really nasty medications for Psoriatic Arthritis and it looks like the antibiotic they wanted to give him will interact with the medicine he's already on. Our family doctor and the doctor treating him for the arthritis have to get together and decide what antibiotic to put him on. Then, they'll call me back. When I have more info, I'll tell Gene.

They told me that he'll have to be on antibiotics for a month and that it could take over 6 months for symptoms to disappear. That's a long time to have a sore, swollen knee.

Poor Gene.

On the upside - maybe I'll finally be able to keep up with him on vacation this time.

I am very sorry to hear this, Laura. But - on the upswing, the doctors sound as though they caught the disease early on!

Laura, has Gene's doctor looked into putting him on Emrel for his arthritis? My DH has been on it since the beginning of the year and it is truly a miracle! He was previously on Methotrexate and it was awful!

Thanks for the info. I'll have Gene ask his doctor about Emrel. He's on Methotrexate AND gets the Remicade IV infusion every 8 weeks.

So sorry to hear this! I know it won't be easy to tell him he's sick....the doctor gave me my DH's diagnosis when they discovered he was sick (I also had to tell him it had come back - twice! - after he finished his year of treatment). It's not easy. {HUGS} to both of you.

I remember meeting Gene at the Philly meet in 2000. He still works for WPVI?? I see the name "Gene" on the morning news (producer??) and I always think of him!!

always quiet, you have Gene mixed up with another Gene who used to post on the DIS. He must have been very popular, more than one person has confused my Gene for the other one.
