has anyone heard of "gay family day?"
I saw something about it on fox network.
Its suppose to be on the 17th of June.
Being on these boards alot, I was surprised to hear it there and not here first.
This is not the same as "gay days" on the 3rd of June.
anyone know more about this?

I believe it is a new event. It is not part of the traditional Gay Day. I think it was scheduled a little later in June to enable non-traditional families with children to attend after schools let out for the summer. Many schools around the country are not out the first weekend of June. I've seen it mentioned on the DIS in a couple of threads, but it was several days ago.

Thanks,
I guess I missed it.

I don't get that, why two special days for gays? Why don't they just go when the rest of us go? I know I'm naive, but not sure why they plan separate days, the point?

Dalpal, It doesn't sound like it will be a big enough get together to make a difference in crowd levels. I had read this thread a few days ago:

2minny, I really don't think it has anything to do with wanting to be separate from heterosexuals. I think it's more like when you have a family reunion, and you set a date. Or like when the cheerleaders have a competion, and they have to set a date. Or when any group of people want to get together for anything- there has to be a date. :D

Cause they want to. Disney does not sponser it, they have nothing to do with it and if they want two special days, why not?

Exactly, well put!!!!

To answer why separate days...first of all these are not planned by Disney, and, "they" do go when the rest of us go. However, planning to go on a group day is about unity, comfort and acceptance. Sadly, gay individuals and families with gay parents don't always feel accepted by others (not Disney the corporation, but individuals in the parks -- or individuals where ever they are). To plan and attend an event where there will be others who are like you can create a very positive feeling.

Furthermore, human nature is such that people feel comfortable and a certain bond with others who are like them. There would be people who would love to go if a sports team fan club organized a special day for say the Mets or the Steelers, and a whole bunch of Irish Americans would be eager to go if some Irish American group planned a day at WDW...Mets fans, Steelers fans, and Irish Americans do go when others go, but they would be happy to join a group of like-minded individuals, too.

I hope this thread does not become a big debate. I've read enough of those about Gay Day over the past few years. If society as a whole was truly tolerant of all individuals, there probably wouldn't be a Gay Day. But society is not tolerant (same sex marriage laws - the lack of these laws and the mere need for these laws prove that point), so I support Gay Day -- and would not hesistate to go to WDW "when they go" --- Heck, I'd go to Disney World any chance I get!!

If I have the choice, I'd rather go during "gay family day".

They are the more loving and more tolerant with their surrounding than most so-called 'regular' families.

I'm willing to bet that there will less inconsiderate people during that day.

(I'm talking from my personal experience... most of my friends are gay)

Furthermore, I think Gay Family Day is a brilliant idea! As if it isn't hard enough being gay, imagine how hard it can be to be a child of gay parents. How wonderful for these kids to see there are others like them (while vacationing in a happy, safe family place).

Or, what a great way for parents to show their acceptance of their gay young adult children. If one of my children ever "came out of the closet" to me, you can bet we'd make a trip to WDW during Gay Family Day! (And we'd also go other times of the year, "when the rest of us go.")

For the same reason any other group plans a special day. They just want to meet and greet with other folks who share their circumstances or interests. If Cystic Fibrosis Families or University of Wisconsin Families or Families with Twins or Families with Dogs Named Bob :p planned two separate days at the parks, no one would ask why. They might think it's odd that there are that many families with dogs named Bob, but who cares how many get-togethers they plan at the parks?

:earsboy:

Did someone say there was a day for dogs named Bob? When is it? I can't wait to tell Bob!!!

:smooth:

My eyes must be acting up, I could have sworn this was the Trip Planning Forum, not the Debate board. People took their time to answer questions about an event, and are ridiculed for doing so...yeah, thats Disney-ish

That was a nice post. :) I do completely understand feeling comfortable with others who are like them. I love seeing other inter-racial couples at the parks. Makes you feel less alone and an object of intense staring.

Ah, Chewy is going to be so disappointed. :)

Is this just for the day of June 17 .... or is a week like in the beginning of June....thanks....amy

My family and I just happened to be in WDW last year 2003 during gay days, and the parks were not too crowded and we had a wonderful time.
