I want to pre-purchse some gas cards to save for our trip. Anyone now the most common chains along the way? Exxon/Mobil, Sunoco, Shell, Hess? thanks!

The major oil companies have plenty of gas stations along I95. Hess, not so. Add BP/Amoco and Chevron to your list. Lot's of Sunoco on the NJ turnpike.

JMO but I don't see an advantage to purchasing gas cards. Do you get a discount?

You need gas. You exit I95. Normally I'd pick the station with the lowest price, shortest line or gas station that looks like it has the cleaniest rest room/best mini-mart. I wouldn't want to be limited by my advance selection of gas card purchases.

All of those brands are common all the way to WDW -- in fact, Hess has 3 stations on Disney property...

In some cases, yes, you do -- particularly at Murphy USA stations located on Walmart property...

I believe that there is only 1 Murphy USA station easily accessible to I95 and that is in either southern NC/Northern SC (I can't remember exactly where, I'm getting too old) So I would not stock up on those cards. Hess is on property , yes, but less accessible from I95 on the way. I don't remember seeing a lot of Hess stations on the drive. There are plenty of BP, Shell, Citgo and Exxon/Mobil stations. The NJ Turnpike is all Sunoco. As you get further south, Racetrac/Raceway, Gate and Valero are plentiful regional gas stations.

I can see this as a great way to put aside a few bucks towards a trip. I just would not limit myself to one brand as that station may not be available when you need it. You may also consider prepaid MC/Visa. While you cannot usually use these as pay at the pump cards, you can always use them by going inside and charging a preset amount on them.

In my experience it is not easy to find cheap gas stations just by exiting the freeway. I live about a mile from a freeway interchange and the main drag is a "miracle mile" with lots of gas stations but every day a different station is cheapest. So you end up scrounging as opposed to just tanking up.

Now once you do find a gas station you like, an ordinary credit card is good enough and usually less trouble than buying a bunch of gas gift cards.

You may get some idea by visiting web sites with names similar to
massachusettsgasprices dot com
usually with the entire state name spelled out in full.

This is going to sound really simplistic, but what is wrong with putting the cash in an envelope somewhere...or just leave it in your bank?

I'm not great at saving so I like to play mind games with myself and sort of force myself to save. If I buy a gas card I am way less likely to spend that but cash in an envelope.......

1. Go to http://maps.google.com/
2. Type in the name of the gas station chain of interest (for example "Shell")
3. Click on "Search Maps"
4. Use your mouse to drag the map around to show the area of interest

Stations will be shown as a red dot on the map. Some will have a letter that corresponds to more details in the left panel.
