Gary Fong?

I am thinking about getting a Gary Fong for my Pentax AF360 flash. From what I can tell, I need the universal mount model. Anyone have experience with it on this flash? Also, I would like to hear from any Gary Fong users. I am trying to decide between the clear or cloud. Most shots will be indoor portraits and snapshots.

I definitely enjoy my GF cloud Lightsphere. I also have the amber dome which makes for a really natural look for typical indoor photos. Just set your WB to tungsten and you're all set.

I don't know a lot about them except that if you're buying for yourself, the Chinese knock-offs on eBay seem to get fairly good reviews.

If you're buying for a present, you'd probably better stick to the "real thing".

I have 2 of the clear, anytime my camera leaves the bag the fong goes on the flash and the flash goes on the camera,, I like them a lot, on other photography boards I frequent, I've heard great reviews and horrible reviews.

my observation has been that most of the bad reviews come from people that don't understand flash and diffusers, they complain that their pics are underexposed or that they lose 1 or 2 stops of light.. maybe I'm wrong but I think that's a given using a diffuser.


my understanding from reading Gary's website is that the cloud is best for normal portraiture, the clear is recommended for photo journalists or for shooting larger groups or settings where you need the extra light..

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and ordered the universal mount cloud model today. I had a pre-Black Friday e-mail deal from Adorama that also included their GUPS laptop feet for $39. It felt like too good of a deal to pass up I think the GUPS are going to end up a stocking stuffer for the DW.

I love my Gary Fong diffuser. I have the clear with the cloud dome. I use it probably 95% of the time I use the flash. I've used other diffusers, but the Gary Fong, to me, gives the best results and is the most versitle.

I use the GF Whaletail Reporter to great effect. I've used other diffusers as well and this works the best for portrait type shots w/o a full studio set-up.

DizzyV6P I would love your impressions of the whaletail reporter. I have been looking at that one and not sure of the need for the reporter vs the studio?

LOVE my whale tail.. only complaint is it falls off constantly! But I am clumsy and didn't get a video with mine so maybe I am attaching it wrong..? Fabulous diffuser for weddings though.. pm for a sweet deal if you like I paid a fraction
