Garden Grill Ruined

I just returned from Disney last night after a long three month hiatus. One of the first things I did was make reservations at the newly re-opened Garden Grill (it was closed while THE LAND was being revamped for Soarin). I have never been so disappointed in my life!

Gone are all the good things that people went to Garden Grill for. No more all you can eat family style platters, no more garden salad with ranch dressing, no more sunflower bread with flavored butter, no more catfish or turkey and stuffing, no more strip steak, no more mashed potatoes, no more worms and dirt.

In an effort to fix something that wasn't broken they revamped the format and menu. You now get a bowl of salad with a very sharp and painful vinagrette dressing, followed by some chewy breadsticks with three dipping sauces, none of which tasted any good. You now have to choose one of five entrees, none of which come even close to the great menu they used to have. The portions were small and even though it's the Garden Grill, my steak came with only 5 string beans and a lump of rock hard mashed potatoes. To add insult to injury, they raised the price for $25.99. I can eat better in Manhattan for that price! They also consider any child over 9 an adult and charge them full price. What were they thinking? Some newly out of school accountant came up with this change.

The waitress admitted that bookings have been down about 50% since the change and I'm sure most of the people still booking are unaware of the menu changes since you won't find any mention of them outside at the podium.

To make matters worse, Disney fired all the bus staff so the wait staff now has to wait, bus and scrape plates so service has gone badly downhill.

I want to warn all the old timers - don't waste your time going back to this place. It's become quite horrible and even though it's still the best themed restaurant in the place with its revolving scenery, only boycotting and complaining will bring back the old family style farm meals that used to give this place its signature. Time to take back this restaurant from the know nothings who tried to fix something that wasn't broken.

I was really pleased to hear that the Garden Grill was reopening and thought about making an adr there until I read some other reviews about the new menu/policies.

It was really a nice place to eat, lots of good fun and fun with the characters. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I haven't read a good review yet! I hope Disney notices, and hears what people are saying, and bring back the old style and quality.

I'm sorry =(

Although I had heard the not so great reviews we tried to get a table (without an ADR)twice last week, once at lunch and once at dinner. We were told that they were completely booked, but interestingly, there were several open tables that we could see. The waiting area was full and it looked like it was taking them a long time to seat people. Both times we were able to get a table at other Epcot restaurants without an ADR - for lunch at Rose and Crown and for dinner at Chefs de France. The food was good at both those places, so I am kind of glad Garden Grill was "booked".

Unfortunatly most Disney restuarants do not have bus staff anymore.

I hated the old menu...I look forward to trying the new...~:) and welcome to the DIS first poster! Sorry your first post had to be a complaint.

I didn't ever get to eat at the Garden Grill and when I got the free dining one of my 1st choices was Garden Grill that is till I saw the new menu.

Sadly no more ice cream social either:(

I agree!

We have a trip coming up and are NOT going to the GG. It is one of those places I always thought we would get to "one day" but I have read so many bad reviews since the change that I have crossed it off the list. I hate it when Disney changes old favorites and I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

I had read and was also told by a CM that is was still all you can eat. They said that you could order as many entrees as you would like and not just have to pick one. Did they let you know this when you went? We were thinking of going there on our December trip. Personally we were never thrilled with the old menu and are looking forward to trying it now.

I hated the old character meal menu...I wish they'd go back to the original more upscale menu with no characters. After reading the new selection, I may try to book it, even though I usually avoid character meals.

Other than adding Soarin', I think Disney ruined "The Land"

The food court used to be fantastic. It was my favorite CS to eat at in all the parks. Now they put the new CS there, and I don't like it at all. I never at at GG, but had planned to in May but wasn't impressed with the new menu, and their dropping of the "Ice Cream Social"

They took out "Food Rocks" (Old "Kitchen Kabaret") which was another favorite of ours.

They left the boring boat ride.

I'm sad to see that they ruined one of the great attractions of Epcot (along with "Journey into Imagination")

It just goes to show that everyone likes something different. We love the ride as DH is a plant nut and is very interested in seeing how things are grown etc...even if it is the same everytime we go on it...:)

The GG was one ofour family's most dos. My dh was almost in tears when I showed me the new menu. We are skipping it this trip. Let's hope they bring back the old and much loved GG.

:sad2: Just back, it didn't look crowded at all to us during lunch. I read the new menu and it didn't interest us, along with the price. The only character I saw was Pluto. It also appeared that the room no longer was turning. :( I agree that the price is ridiculous, I saw very few wait staff too. Also agree about the "new" Sunshine Seasons. Nothing that my DD8 would eat, she loved the pasta station they used to have, older DD loved the chicken fingers. DH would usually get barbequed something. The noodle dishes looked interesting but after our disappointment with the Noodle station at MK we wouldn't try it. Why do they insist on "fixing" things that aren't broken? :sad2:

I did not eat at the GG myself but I was in WDW last week, and both times I was in the Land to ride Soarin the seating area was packed. If attendance is down it was not last week.
I ate at the food court, I think that they have a nice selection. I had chinese food which was very good.
I love the boat ride, but again both times I was there the wait time was 40 minutes, and I already had a fast pass for other rides so could not get a fast pass for the boat.

See I hate reading these. We are in Epcot that day and wanted to do a character lunch for ds going to be 9. I know he would love a character meal and both kids would like the food but there has been so much negativity it worries me.

We ate a GG for our first meal last year and loved it. While the food wasn't our fav, we liked it and the character interaction was wonderful! The new menu does not look good to me at all and DD is 11. No way am I paying the adult price for her...she's never eaten $10 worth of food, much less $25. We'll be going somewhere else.

We love it too!! My DH is a farmer and so we always find it really interesting to see how they're growing things.
