According to the WDW Dining reservations Garden Grill provides a small birthday cake. Does anyone know anything about this? Is the info correct and do I need to do anything in advance to get DS one? I didn't even know anything about it until I made the reservation and saw the info there.

From the Disney World reservations

General Information

Birthday celebrants are given a special Garden Grill "birthday certificate" signed by Mickey, Chip and Dale. A small complimentary birthday cake is presented to the celebrant.
Menu items, pricing and hours are subject to change without notice.
Guests may request a 6" cake (non-personalized) upon arrival at the dining location for a charge of $21.00 plus tax and gratuity (no advance notice required), with the exception of Victoria & Albert's at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Guests who wish to order a personalized cake may call the "Cake Hotline" at (407) 827-2253. Guests under age 18 must have parent or guardian permission to call. Personalized cake orders require 48-hour advance notice.
Specialty celebration cakes are available for an additional charge and should be ordered 48 hours in advance by calling the Cake Hotline at (407) 827-2253. Guests under age 18 must have parent or guardian permission to call.

I didn't think that any of the restaurants provided an actual cake. You can buy a cake (look for the cake thread). Many restaurants do give the special people a cupcake--it's pretty good.

That is what I thought too. I just added above in orginal post info from the Disney reservations site when I made our reservations.

We were at Garden Grill on 9/23 (can't believe it has been a month already :sad2:) and DD was given a birthday cupcake in addition to the regular child dessert. I saw many cupcakes go by no cakes.

Thank goodness! We will be eating there for DS's birthday next trip and I didn't want him to get a cake and the girls not to (we're eating at CRT and 1900 PF on different night for their birthdays).

I actually would prefer that to a full cake anyway. Hopefully that is what they are talking about. Did you just have to tell them when you checked in.

When I had originally made the reservation online, there was a spot to note any celebrations. I didn't even think about it when checking in (I was pooped out LOL) but after we were seated, our waiter asked me about the birthday and said he would take care of it.

Thank you!:thumbsup2 I just found it after looking at the reservation again.
