I have a bunch of stuff I've been collecting for a garage sale, but the summer got away from me. I have had sales in the summer months as well as in the spring, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever had a sale in the fall. Is it better to wait until spring, or do you base your sale on the season of clothes you have to sell? I have a lot of fall stuff, but, including lots of fall mens clothes (DH has been busy cleaning out his closet), but probably the majority of kids clothes are summer things, and some seasonal things (Christmas decorations), as well as the standard furniture/household items. I just don't want to store all this stuff in the basement if I could sell it this fall. We are getting the garage cleaned out and DH said the stuff has to go!

I should add I'm not into selling on Ebay. I've tried that and never had much luck in selling clothes on there. I think it's kind of hit or miss. My neighborhood has lots of kids and stay at home moms, so I think I'd be more successful having a garage sale.

Part of me also wants to just donate everything and be done with it because garage sales are a lot of work. But then, every extra penny helps for our August trip, so I waver between both options.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I'm hoping I can get some experienced opinions. TIA. :)

I just had a garage sale over labor day weekend. I too had all the things listed in your sale. I sold every item for $1 (with the exception of furniture and a few other items), but all the clothes and shoes were $1. Believe me they sold like hot cakes and people loved they were so cheap. I have a boy and a girl so had both types of clothing as well as mens and womens.

We actually had a couple other garage sales on our street that weekend and several people explained others were selling their stuff for more and they were more willing to pay my cheaper prices. I had several comments like this. So if you want to get rid of it sell it for cheap.

Every garage sell I have I call our local mission and have a scheduled pick up for later that day and what doesn't sell I donate so I too can get it out of my house. Especially since Christmas is right around the corner.

You might want to advertise on Craigs list so you can get a larger crowd. (if you don't know what Craigs list is just go to www.craigslist.com and create an account and follow instructions for postings). I have done this several times in the past.

IMO you can just about have a garage sale anytime.

Our garage sale is going to be the first Sat in Oct. Summer escaped me also. Since we combined households, the amount of stuff we have is just staggering. I am focusing on little stuff, the bulk of our things will be $1 or less.

Thanks for your responses. I'm glad to hear fall sales can be successfu.

I really like the idea of selling things cheap. And $1 for clothes will really add up, as we have a ton of clothes. It will also be nice and easy, rather than having to put individual prices on things, I can just put up a sign that says "Clothes - $1", and so forth. I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone will be interested in my Santa Bears I've been saving for years. I'm really over them, and don't really want to give them away, but maybe someone else will have an interest in them. I may also try a 50% off sale at the end, to try to get rid of stuff, too. I've heard that works well - maybe even better than a bag sale.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. I'm going to go for it. I have signs left over from previous sales, so I only need to change the date, so I'm pretty set.

I can't wait until DH gets home. He'll be happy to know the stuff is on the way out. I will plan the sale for the first weekend in October. I'm going to see if any of my neighbors also want to have a sale, to attract more business.

I will look into Craigslist. I don't really want to put my address on there, so maybe I can just give a general location.

We have a neighborhood one every fall and another in the spring. I think both times do well. Our is tomorrow so I better get back to work!!!
