Ok, I am doing spring cleaning and have lots of brand name clothing. Some unfortunately for me, were not even worn. How do you all price these? I have Limited Too, Gap, Old Navy, Abercrombie & Fitch, Abercrombie, Hollister, etc. How much do I ask for clothing with tags? This is my first garage sale, so any info. and advice is greatly appreciated.:)

Having the tags still on has no bearing on the price. It's very common for garage sale clothes to have the tags still on them.

Thanks for the info. So what is a general price range for clothing at garage sales?:confused3

It really depends on your area. If you can post the general area where you're from, maybe someone here can tell you.

Depends on the item, season, and how in style the items are.

I look at each item and then pretty much ball park it. I do tend to price a little higher cause you can always come down but not haggle up.

I had adult Gap jeans, brand new with tags, that I marked at $10 and got $7.50 for them.

Just be sure to put the new items in an area away from the used clothing and mark them new. Lumping them in with used clothing will make them less desireable at a higher price.

You can always take the new items to a thrift shop and see what they would offer you there. There's a chain around this area called Platos Closet. My young adult daughters have taken gently used and new items that are for the young and trendy and have gotten much for for the items there than they would have gotten in a garrage sale.

You might do better at a consignment shop or on eBay. I rarely sell clothing at all a garage sales as people here expect you to basically give it away (like $.25 to $.50 an item). I probably make 10X what I would get at a garage sale by selling on eBay, so it is usually worth the hassel for anything nice and name brand.

Depends if you really want to make money or basically want to have basically nothing left at the end of the sale (the way I prefer it). Here's the thing - you MIGHT get someone who really likes a certain brand and happens to be looking in your sizes who is willing to pay more....but the 'masses' that go to garage sales (at least around here) are looking, regardless of brand, for CHEAP clothing. Most of the time from 25 cents per item maybe up to $1.00 per item (like for jeans in good or very good condition). For the ones with tags - $1.00 or $2.00 I would say.

Again, this is if you really want to get rid of it. If you want to make money on it - try Craigslist or Ebay - you will more easily find the people who are willing to pay more for brand.

We also have a great area for re-selling clothes at garage sales. I would easily put $10 on new jeans, and they would sell in a heartbeat! I typically will put $3-$5 on used clothing. We sell at regular price Friday, and half price on Saturday - and most of our clothes sells!

I have gotten really good prices at my Garage Sales, especially on the NWT items. Try Ebay first and you can put the unsold things at your sale. I took things to a consignment shop and they wanted to give me nothing for them, so I did a garage sale and made more. Kids clothes go for a premium in our area...I got more than I paid for some of it. I'm in Ohio, maybe the area plays a role in the prices.

I have to agree with taking the name brands to a consignment shop. I think you'll get more $$ that way.

I sell my used clothes to go out the door. Everything is .50 each. You would not believe the amount of people who buy bags of clothing for that price. Still better than just giving it go Goodwill or somewhere else.

Good luck on your sale!

If at all possible, hang up as much of the clothing as possible. This helps on the selling of the items and you are not constantly refolding the items. This can be done by tying a rope between two trees or posts. As a person who has done this and been to sales that have done this, I think it helps a lot!

As far as prices go, I do think that having the tags on them does help the resale value. I certainly would pay more for an item that has tags on it compared to one that does not. I bought several T-shirts from AE, Aeropostale and Abercrombie last summer and I paid anywhere from $3 (pretty used) to $5 (like new) each for them.

When you tag the items, put the size on the tag. This is just a convenience for the customer, but if they don't have to look all over for a size, they tend to buy more. It also stops you from stopping what you are doing to answer questions.

Be prepared to haggle. I always have a "bottom line" price in mind when tagging items. No matter what the item is, people will ask you if you will take a lower price. It gets irritating, but that is the garage sale business.

Good luck with your sale! I hope it goes well!

In our area garage sale prices for clothes are typically in the $1 range. I have taken my clothes to consign when they are name brands and get much better prices.

This is my take as well..I GO to garage sales and I am looking for people who want to get rid of their junk, not make a fortune. Clothes around here go for 25 to a few dollars max. If you have new items with tags, definately put them on Ebay or take to a consignment shop. Plus, I wouldn't put high prices on things with a plan to haggle. I won't haggle and although some will, I notice that the garage salers that go around when I do really don't have time. I usually hit 10-15 sales and I just scan to see if I want something, if the price is right or not and move on. I really like when things are marked with prices, and if I have to ask, know what you want to charge. When I'm at a sale and nothing is marked and I hear someone asking what something costs and the seller goes "uh..I don't know, not much, what do you think?", I know it's time to leave. Also..please keep your dog securely away from the sale and not where he can bark and snarl at everyone. Of course Skippy is a sweetheart to YOU, but all these people tramping on HIS property are a challenge to him. Plus..if you are selling your kid's toys make sure they are OK with that or not at the sale. I picked up a toy once and a kid started screaming and yanked it from me saying "THAT"S MINE!" needless to say I left right away :)

Wow..that's amazing...I guess area really does have something to do with it. Our goal is beat all the trucks from Juarez to our sales..they load up these rickety things sky high in a heartbeat. Clothes go cheap or not at all.

I always get rid of tons of clothes at my yardsales. I want to get rid of it...not make a fortune off of it....still better than donating to Goodwill :thumbsup2

I price everything at 50 cents. I usually have a rack of really nice stuff like coats or blazers or sets that is $1. Except for a really nice leather coat I sold one year (too small) for $5, I pretty much stick with those prices and it sells. I have been to a lot of sales where people want $3-$5 for kids outfits...I can get brand new stuff cheaper than that at Carters or Target using sales/coupons. If you are more interested in making money than getting rid of the stuff....definitely go the consignment route.

I have a rolling rack for longer stuff. I also hang two chains across my garage entrance. One hanger per link. That way they don't all slide together....keeps everything seperated for easy viewing. I woman's clothes on top and mens on the bottom. I haven't sold my son's clothes yet (saving for another baby) but sales I have been too I like when it is hung or in boxes by size/style (ie box of 2t shirts, box of 2t shorts, box of 3t shirts, etc).
