Funky Colored Hair Stripe?

My 10 year old wants to have a colored stripe in her blondish hair (her school is OK with it, BTW). I went to Sally Beauty Supply and she picked out a blue color. Then, they told me that the semi-permanent hair color wouldn't "take" and that I would have to bleach my DD's hair first. I didn't want to do anything so drastic and I wanted it to eventually (after a month or two) wash out. Does anyone have experience with medium blond hair and funky colors?

Blue is one of the most difficult colors to get right, imo.
Hard to get on at the desired shade and hard to get rid of when you are done with it. :rotfl:
The blue should show up on medium blonde hair, but it will not look like it is supposed to look. Depending on the shade of blue, in unbleached hair it may look more black or it could come out green. It is always recommended that hair is stripped before adding funky colors to achieve the desired result.

Pink seems to wash out fairly quickly -- in a clorine pool it comes out almost immediately.

My hair stylist also said that blue is hard to get right. I have bright pink streaks. My hair is dark though, so I do have to bleach it first. And the fun colors fade FAST. I'm not sure what brand of color she uses at the salon, but it needs to be touched up after just a couple of weeks. I touch up myself in between cuts & root touch-ups with Punky Color brand, and it lasts much longer, more like 6 weeks,m and by then it's time for another hair cut anyway.

When my DD was 15, she was cast for a part in a film. The director wanted her hair to be pink. She was playing a Goth kid. DD has blond hair. I bought the type of dye that would wash out from Sally's. I tried it three times and the best I could get was a strawberry blond. Fortunately, the director was okay with it.

When I talked to our hair stylist about it, she told me that the only way to get bright colors is to strip the color from the hair first and then apply the dye.

My stylist and I tried to put neon purple streaks in my hair a year or two ago (my hair is dyed a shade of eggplant-y purple/burgundy). She bleached out the areas that we wanted - it literally came out white - then put the neon purple dye on it.

Came out orange... :confused3

In high school we used Kool Aid to put fun streaks in our hair, I did Purple saurus Rex, you take the Kool AId powder and add a little bit of water until you have like a paste, then put it on the part of your hair that you want to streak. I imagine you could google to find instructions, but it was easy and lasted a long time. It faded from purple to pink quickly but the pink lasted a long time.

Is there any blue Kool Aid flavors?

Might be worth a trip to the salon if she must have BLUE.

update: found a link it gives directions for blue:

Does she want several stripes of color or just one? I'm asking because a lot of the kids here are getting one which is actually a colored extension they put in the hair. It's about $10 at a participation salon and the money goes to breast cancer. In fact my dd15 is going with her cheer squad tonight.

I was going to say koolaid too. I've seen teens with a different color every week.......koolaid......even DIS green.

My girls have streaks, we did Candy Apple Red in DD13 and Midnight Blue in DD9s. These are the semi permanent that wash out, not sure of brand but I can look when I get home if you want me to. They had the initial streaks done by a pro but I do the touch ups myself. So yes, they do have blonde streaks in their hair that we use as the "base" for the other colors. The Candy Apple Red was RED for about 2 weeks, then it slowly turns pink until it's gone, I've redone DD13s once since it was done by Starr in July, DD9s blue stayed longer but it did turn green towards the end, we are thinking of redoing hers this week. We have blue, purple and red at home to chose from. It does last for quite a while, like I said, theirs was done first in July and DD9s was green until just last week. It's really not hard to do at home, I just find the strands and pull them out, add the color and wrap in foil, let them sit for 20 min. and then they wash their hair, easy peasy lemon squeesy. :)

My DD colored her hair a very dark brown, almost black. We've tried with Clairol semi-permanet to get red hightlights/streaks but it comes out almost orange.

Is there a special brand to use in order to get these bright colors?

You would have to bleach a streak and then color it with a Manic Panic or other punkish type color you can find them at a beauty supply store, or try the Rockadile Red Kool Aid, but not sure if it would work on dark hair that has been dyed already, your best bet is a salon or ask a hair dresser/

The people who work at the beauty supply store are usually pretty helpful.

Well, shoot. I really don't want to bleach her hair because then I'm stuck coloring it until it grows out. Would a color other than blue work better without bleaching?

I've done blue before and unless your hair is already naturally really light blonde, you have to bleach it or it won't turn out right. for me blues/greens didn't last very long at all and we're pretty easy to get rid of now. Now reds/pinks stay a LONG time before they finally fade out. btw...I ONLY use Manic Panic for mine. not sure what brand you were looking at at Sally's but they do carry it there and it has always taken really good to my hair, but each person's hair is different.

So ... do I have to bleach for red or pink? I think she'll settle for those colors.

It should work but it wont be as bright or noticable. It would be a red tinted version of her natural hair color, whereas if you bleach it, it will come out the true bright red color

looking at your daughter's hair color in your siggy, I'd say not. the red or pink may not turn out quite as vibrant, but it will come out better than the blue would on non bleached hair. It would still look good.

As a teen, my hair color was similar to your daughter's in your sig pic. I used to dye my bangs a deep redish pink color, without bleaching first and it worked really well. The color I used was Vampire Red from Manic Panic. I think they sell it at Sally Beauty Supply.

I was going to suggest Manic Panic as well. They used to sell it at Hot Topic, too. My hair was not as light as your dd's when I used it (purple and pink) and I did not have to bleach my hair first.

I *think* with the pink I had to have it professionally removed but it wasn't expensive. Kind of like having a swimmer's hair treatment.

DD16 has had streaks in the front of her hair for the past year. She is brunette so after a failed attempt by me to dye her hair;I had our hairsylist bleach and color. We then touched it up at home.

I second Hot Topic for the dye. I don't remember the brand name by the color washes out in 10 shampooings.

Funny story, when we were in Disney in August DD was swimming when a young girl (maybe 5) asked her what happened to her hair. DD was very nice and explained she dyed it. Then in Mass 2 weeks ago, we were kneeling after receiving communion. A young girl (maybe 4) was walking down the aisle with her mom and we could hear the girl saying "purple, her hair is purple". After Mass I told DD, you must have realized you would get comments when you did this"
