Can anyone share some fun Disney facts...my 8 yr old cousin is writing an essay on Disney and her mother is a Disney virgin:confused3

My Daughter did a speech on Walt Disney a few years ago. I will see if I can find it for you.

When Disney opened Disneyland in 1955 he was short on $$ to pay the plumbers, he had to choose between the toilets working and the fountains working, he chose - thank god, toilets, he was slammed in the media as they felt it was a way to sell more soft drinks as the fountains did not work, really it was he could not afford the plumbing work.

He also could not pave main street till last minute, thus many of the ladies of the day - who of course came in high heels, sank into the fresh tar!!The PolynesiaN Resort had its Long Houses renamed about 10 years ago to better reflect their location in the actual south pacific. If you look at a map of the longhouses from above they better represent their mapped location on the globe.

The Magic Kingdom is above sea level, it has tunnels underneath that act as service corridors, that were made when the dredge of seven seas lagoon was placed on top of its site to create its structure and dig out the lagoon as a body of water from what was once a swamp.

IN 1978 A WATER VIEW ROOM AT THE POLY WAS $75 PER NIGHT.

There is a post somewhere on all of these cool facts, but some of the facts are incorrect.

The basic interesting facts for 8 year olds.....

WDW is built on swamp land. When Disney bought it he got it for a fraction of the price as noone could understand what he would want swamp land for. He bought it under different company names so the seller wouldn't realize his plans for such a large purchase and jack the price up.

The Seven Seas Lagoon (the water between MK and the resorts, TTC) actually has a wave machine at the bottom and the idea was to always have waves moving but the waves eroded the shoreline too quickly so they had to shut it off permanently - so it is still there doing nothing.

The buildings on Main street are desinged using "forced perception" which means that as the building gets taller, the features of it get smaller therefore making it look like it is higher up than it is. In other words, a second floor window is much smaller than it should be as it is lower than a second floor would ever be. Even the brick designs get smaller.

Mickey's real name was Mortimer but Walt's wife said noone would bond with a mouse called Mortimer so she suggested he call the mouse mickey.

EPCOT was supposed to be a community of homes where people could live (I used to beg my dad to buy one when they were planning it). The Environmental Prototype Community of Tomorrow was supposed to have neighbourhoods of homes with hi-tech features (which by now would most likely be very non-hi tech)

When MK first opened, there was an admission price and then you had to buy a book of tickets to ride the rides. Tickets were coloured by letter and this is where the term "an E ticket ride" comes from. You only had some many tickets to ride so many times.......hopping on space mountain 5 times would use up al of those tickets and so you would need another book to ride more.

That's all I can think of for now but I am sure there are TONS of websites dedicated to this stuff!

I have a 12 page word documnet I can send you if you PM me your email.

It focuses on the Magic Kingdom, but you are welcome to it.

Great tips. A little more info on Forced Perspective.

Here's one:

Walt Disney's father, Elias, is Canadian! Born in Bluevale, Ontario and immigrated to the US in 1878. Found this in Wikipedia
