Full membership, number of direct or grandfathered points required?

We are beginning to think about lowering our point totals, and these would all be gratuitous transfers to family. I want to be sure each has a full membership.

Based on how it has worked, gratuitous transfers have always retained their benefits.

What I don’t know is whether it has to be to family members or can be to anyone.

From what I understand the benefits tranfer with the points if it’s a gratuitous transfer. So, if for example you have a grandfathered resale the new owner would still have the benefits.
If it’s a direct contract of 25, when that was the minimum for benefits, then the new owner would also have benefits.
So it depends on the status of the contract

Each contract carries it’s own rules based on when it was purchased….like I have an SSR contract that is good at all resorts because I bought in. 2017, but it doesn’t come with membership extras as those ended foe resale contracts in 2016.

For what it's worth: we're in that exact situation right now, and have had multiple conversations w/DVC about it.

Short answer: to get full benefits, the "new" owner has to have 150 or more direct (or g'fathered) points.

The background: I have three 50-point BCV contracts, each bought in 2007 directly from Disney. I want to give these points to my DS (gratuitous transfer)....once the gift is done, DS will have full "blue card" m'ship/privileges---but only if I give him all 3 contracts (150 points)....if I give him only 1 or 2 contracts (50 or 100 points), even though they were purchased directly from Disney and not subject to any restrictions, he will not get full mship benefits based on having an insufficient number of qualifying points.

So does a transfer work differently than adding someone to the contract? I bought 75 Grand Floridian points when they were first offered and I think the minimum was 25 points for blue card at the time. After my daughter became an adult, I added her to the contract and she received full "blue card" membership/privileges.

I think you need to write a formal letter to Senior VP of DVC, Bill Dierckson, and ask for a formal answer, after explaining your situation. The problem you may be facing is that the lower level MS personnel you are talking to may be making conclusions while not going to the top to get a definitive answer.

I actually did that (writing to the prior senior VP, Ken Potrock) when the direct purchase 75-point minimum was adopted in Feb 2018, which has since been modified and is now a 150-point minimum. All my points, including resale, were purchased before 2010. I specifically pointed out my intent to "gift," either before or at time of death, my various contracts to my children. I pointed out that I had been previously informed that all prior restrictions created would not apply to any contract I gave to any of my kids. I received a phone call from two people working with him who told me that any of my contracts I gave to my children would be subject to the same rights to reserving rooms and using membership benefits that I had as the owner of the contracts.
