Ft. Wilderness villas or cabins in December?

We will be going to WDW the second week in December with out then five-year old and twins, who will be ten months old. We need accomodations with at least one separate room so the kids can sleep while we hang out at night. Convenience is probably the most important consideration: I'd like to be able to get in and out of the park fairly easily with the twins while allowing my husband and older son to stay. I'd also like to be near shops and restaurants, if that's possible. Also, we'd like to stay somewhere that is a little bit quiet, although that's not a huge issue.

Right now, we have reservations for a cabin. I've heard good things about them, except for a few reviews that said they weren't very clean (this is REALLY important). I know nothing about the villas, but it sounds like everyone likes them who posts here.

Any thoughts?

First WELCOME to the DIS

There are no Villas at Ft. Wilderness Campground, only the cabins. They do have Villas @ Wilderness Lodge and from what you have posted about what type of amenities you would like...The Villas would be the place for you and your family.

Plus the Wilderness Lodge and Villas are beautiful during the holidays.

Don't wait because these resorts are very popular during December, I have had my reservation for the Villas in December for 4 months.

Thanks. I actually meant to compare the cabins at the campground with the villas? I'm not sure the exact names.

The Villas at Wilderness Lodge are part of the Disney Vacation club and located very near the Wilderness Lodge Resort. These villas will be very expensive and hard to get a reservation in to at Christmas time. It is a popular spot, and doesn't have as many rooms as Old Key West and Saratoga, which also have villas. You can scroll down the list of forums at the DIS and read about the VWL there.


The cabins are really modular homes and are very nice, but located at the Fort Wilderness Campground. They have a separate bedroom that your kids could sleep in while you take the pull-down Murphy bed where the TV is. That's what DH and I did when our 3 kids were little. The cabins are more remote and the travel time takes longer unless you have a car. They are also more private, with no shared walls like the Villas have.

I would say either accomodation will be good, the Villas are more upscale, but if money is an issue, go with the cabin and stop at the Wilderness Lodge to take in the Christmas decorations, they are incredibule. If money isn't an issue, and you can get a reservation, go with the Villas at Wilderness Lodge.

The villas are much nicer imho. The Wilderness Lodge itself is more convenient (some of those loops the cabins are in are in Eastern Guam!). Its a short walk to the boat to MK and my twin 4 1/2 year olds loved the boat ride from WL almost as much as a rides at MK.

Also, I'm not big on double beds so the FW cabins would not be my choice. I like the big bed, Jacuzzi etc in the Villas.

Wilderness Lodge Villas are convenient to Magic Kingdom. Fort Wildernss Cabins are not convenient at all.

I haven't stayed at the Wilderness Lodge Villas but have at at Fort Wilderness Cabin so this will be about those. Your high priorities are -

1 - a separate room so the kids can sleep while you hang out - you definitely get that at the Cabin. The bedroom in the back (double bed and bunk beds)has a door that closes between it and the living/kitchen area.

2 - getting in and out of the parks with twins on your own - a bit tricky. You will have to take an internal bus either to the back of the camppground or the the front, depending on which park you are going to. From the back of the campground, it's a boat to Magic Kingdom. The other three parks are buses.

3 - cleanliness (big priority) - we couldn't even leave one single rinsed out glass in our sink at the Cabin. It would be in the dishwasher and cleaned when we got back. We always have plenty of clean towels. Your Do Not Disturb sign will be a magnet on the front door.

The Cabin would be nice so your five year old can play at your cabin while you and your husband relax on the deck and be able to watch him all the time. There's plenty of places to run around. The closeness to shops and restaurants isn't that great but you do have the full kitchen and there's the Trail's End buffett at the campground. You would have to use the internal bus system to get there, however.

A quietness level wasn't that high for you but a cabin will be the quietest you can possibly get on Disney World property. If you do decide to stay there, though, take a flashlight. At least one. It's quiet and dark.

We've stayed in the cabins twice and love them. I've never stayed in the villas. The cabins are quiet and we never had issues with them not being clean. We found them very comfortable and the bedroom was nice as we could put the boys to bed and still be able to stay up. The only thing I didn't care for was the walking room in the bedroom isn't the greatest...which isn't bad but with little ones, i felt like we were on top of each other. So my concern is with 10 month old twins, I would imagine you would be using some sort of crib which wouldn't allow much room left over. You would have to walk to the bustop which goes thru out the park to get to another bus to go elsewhere....with little ones, this isn't always fun. The boat ride to MK is amazing and we never waited long. There are 2 gift shops in the campground....but depending on where you're located, can be a trip to get to.

We've done both and love them each. The drawback with the cabins is that you have to take an internal bus to get to the bus depot for the parks. We picked a loop the was close to settlement depot and then we could walk very easily to the buses.
You may be out of luck for the villas. They are extremely hard to get during the holidays due to the fact that WL is one of the best decorated resorts and the DVC members will have first crack at the villas.

Either way, I don't think you'll go wrong

The Fort is great....but with for a mother trying to manage I'm sure the villa's are the better choice...and that's coming from Ft. Wilderness loyalty....but I have grandbaby's also.
