Frontier now pre-assigns seats to children under 13 with their adult from the same reservation before check-in starts. This is without paying anything extra.
The good: obviously removes the stress of worrying if your kid will be separated from you if you don't pay for seats
The bad: larger parties will be split up because the unassigned passengers will be separately assigned at check-in
We flew as a family of 8 (2 adults, 6 kids - three under 13 and three teens). A few days before check-in, I noticed that five of us, the two adults and three children under 13, all had seats assigned together (A-F in the same row), but the other three did not have seats assigned (kids 13, 14, 15). At the 24-hour mark, I checked in, and the three teens were seated together a few rows from the rest of us. The same patten held for the return flight. I flew again with my daughter (age 8), and we were again preassigned seats together prior to checking in. In the past, I'd check in at 24-hours and usually be put together, or close to it (usually 6 across with 2 in the row in front or behind).
I don't know what would happen if you had two adults and 1 child or two adults and two children. I think there's a good possibility that the second adult would be separated because the child or two children would already be sitting with the first adult. Obviously, you could pay for seats for the entire party to ensure you sit together. It's also possible that there would be nearby seats available for the second adult to buy, and you'd only pay for one seat assignment because you'd know in advance the location of the kids and first adult.
In my case, it worked out perfectly, but I can see how it might complicate things for some parties. Just putting this out there for people who are considering Frontier for the first time or who have not flown them recently.
