Ok, wait. So the new BSG pilot is bad, but Independence Day is good?

And Wing Commander is only bad because of Freddy Prinze Jr.

Independence day is great in one respect - special effects. Though seeing Brent Spiner act like a complete goof is endearing as well (especially after ST:TNG).

The BSG pilot is mediocre. If we're going to open it up to mediocre television shows, there's a whole slew of better TV shows to watch (Star Blazers, Blakes 7, Red Dwarf, ST:TNG's "Yesterday's Enterprise", most of the back half of the Xindi arc (not counting the space-Nazis), the "Mirror-Mirror" DS9 episode (Trials and Tribbilations), and pretty much anything MST3K.

as for wing commander being bad only because of FP Jr? Jen.. can we get a refund on that wedding??

I saw Wing Commander the day it came out for the same reason everyone else in that packed theater saw it - the previews included the first ever preview for "The Phantom Menace". Unlike 75% of the audience I did not leave after the preview but stayed for the movie. Halfway through the movie I realised the error I'd made. Wing Commander was a seminal. the movie? Not even worth a pound of sebum.

john

PS: does the TV have HDMI? I'm bringing the lappy :)

Please let us know what days and times these sci-fi events are so I can make sure I stay as far away from room 8516 as possible :duck: and have Mickey security on standby. :lmao:

I'll keep these two in line...

now returning you back to an unhijacked thread....

If we do have HDMI, i have a bunch of Rifftrax shorts that we can stick in between the features.

Star Blazers

If you *truly* were a SF fan, you'd know its Space Battleship Yamato. You'd also know there's a live version coming out 12-1 in Japan and I'm desperately trying to figure out how to get a copy onboard.

And Wing Commander manages to surpass the threshold from Bad to good because its so bad. It's the same reason people actually watch Plan 9 these days.

My husband, retired Coast Guard, gets really upset when passengers and especially crew don't take the life boat drills seriously. He thinks Disney does a pretty good job.
Article just showing up on AOL news. Luckly, sounds like no serious injuries but a shame their vacation is ruined.

The Carnival Splendor cruise ship is in limbo about 150 miles south of San Diego after a fire in the engine room.

The US Coast Guard is sending two ships to the scene, Petty Officer Henry Dunphy tells AOL Travel News. The location is about 55 miles west of Punta San Jacinto, Mexico.

"The fire has been extinguished however there continues to be smoke in the area and the ship's fire crews remain on the scene," Carnival Cruise Lines says in a statement.
The 113,000-ton ship has 3,266 guests and approximately 1,100 crew members onboard, according to Dunphy.

The ship left Long Beach on a 7-night Mexican Rivera cruise on Sunday evening. The fire broke out in the engine room around 6 a.m. this morning, and took about three hours to contain. Then there was a re-flash about 45 minutes after that, Dunphy says.

The ship's engines were shutdown. "At this point they are trying to get the propulsion started again," he says.

Guests were moved from their cabins to the open Lido deck.

"Announcements began at approximately 6.30am advising guests of the situation and asking them to move from their cabins to the ship's Lido Deck, which is an upper level deck with outdoor space," Carnival says in its statement. "Guests are being provided with bottled water and food items and are able to move around on the ship's upper open deck areas."

Two guests and a crew member reportedly suffered panic attacks, but no other injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard is sending two cutters to the scene to assist, the 225-foot-long Aspen out of San Francisco and the 110-foot Edisto out of San Diego, Dunphy says.

You mean "Uchū Senkan Yamato" aka 宇宙戦艦ヤマト ? :) Just going with the local name for the casual crowd. Being in second grade and seeing the lead characters killed repeatedly leaves quite an impact and made afternoon cartoons afterwards lame in comparison.

I'm gonna leave this topic here as we've probably beaten it to death. We can always make the final decisions on the boat.

Hi! I sent Jen a PM weeks ago re: what to bring for sci-fi-night and she did indeed say that her husband and brother should have it covered----oh yeah, this sounds like fun!

I'll happily bring the new Doctor Who series with me---everyone should see the episode "Blink" once! I also recently purchased cheesey 1980's sci-fi TV series box-sets---if there are any requests---just PM me:)

I wouldn't join any after-high-school activities because I just had to be home in time to watch Star Blazers! I watched too much TV growing up and I still watch entirely too much TV today. Sigh.

The first group of lanyards was mailed a few days ago and some of you more local may get them today - let me know when you do! (Can you tell I am anxious that they all make it to thier destinations?) :rotfl2:

At our Dis-meet..we were discussing the Rocky Horror Picture Show... do you think they will let us play that on the big screen and we can have a dive in movie? :lmao:

I have been working on my Holiday cards today so I can mail them in a couple of weeks..things are moving so quickly..I really don't see how I am going to get everything done!

Hi everyone,

In addition to being EXTREMELY EXCITED to be going to see Oprah, we are also looking forward to this cruise!!

This will be our second cruise with DCL, and our first one on the Wonder.

We are having one week in Orlando prior to the cruise, and six days in Anaheim after the cruise.

Our names are Catherine, Warren and Kate. Kate will celebrate her birthday (she will be 15 on the 8th January) on the cruise.

We are looking forward to meeting you all and having a WONDERful time!

Have a good day!

Catherine

Welcome on board.

Another cruise graphic. I really wish I had the time to make more but slowly I will get more made. I love making magnets for our doors. :) Feel free to use this or anything else I post. :)

I really love this graphic. Thank you for sharing.

DCL transfers from the port to DL, do we have to phone to get it added or can we ask our TA's to do it?

I hate having to phone!!

I always had DU handle my transfer arrangements.

Oh my! I also like late nights!! On previous cruises, they met at 3:00 or so! That's PM.

I'll check closer to leaving, Lori and Tami, to see if we want to meet sometime and give it a try. My plans do not include sunrise though. :rotfl2:

PM me or post, if anyone else wants to be included in a yoga gathering.

Barb

On the Transatlantic they did not do Sunrise Yoga, but Sunrise Stretch. This was fantastic and we did this every morning until we got to St.Maarten. By then we had run out of steam.

Well, looks like project Dubai is back on track. I had a call from a lovely lady at HR in Dubai today and she wanted to discuss the terms and conditions of the job with me. I was pretty impressed. They would provide a two bedroom apartment, transport between the accommodation and work, health insurance and a few other perks. It would mean working night shifts again, but I used to love working nights.

They are now making arrangements for me to do the written assessment here in Manchester and if I should pass this, I would then be invited to Dubai for further assessments and interviews. Keep you fingers crossed for me.

I had some more good news at work today. Since September 1st, we have operated one of our two daily services in and out of Manchester with an A380. On November 30th, 6 team leaders will get a tour of the aircraft. I am one of the lucky 6. I am so excited. I was lucky enough to fly in an A380 at the beginning of the year, but I was traveling in economy and did not get the chance to see the Business and First class cabins. This time I will get to see the whole aircraft.

I am still patiently waiting for my room assignment. I know that I probably have to wait until November 22nd, but the excitement has taken hold here.

We are in the midst of an ice and snow storm. Can't believe it. Schools are closed or have a delay opening. As a retired teacher I was one of the few that hated "snow days" because I knew we would be making them up in June when it was hot.

Need to start packing to go back to FL. This weather give me the push to do it.
WOW!! Where are you? I will NEVER miss snow!!

Anyone interested in doing a geocache hunt on CC in the afternoon? I have always wanted to try this and I know that as a Floridian, I will not be swimming in January at CC! :)

I've never done this. if it's too cold to swim, i'd be interested. what do i need?

Looks like we are in for a beautiful cruise!
I have listed my plans above and I am hoping for some recommendations for the open ports that I have nothing listed……Manzanillo & Puerto Vallarta????

FABULOUS info!!

Des- the lanyards arrived in the mail today! I was so excited when I got home from work just now and saw the package waiting for me! The lanyards look awesome, thanks again for organizing this and mailing them out, I cant believe they got here so fast. Cant wait to show it off on the cruise!

Also- I got a lot more PMs today requesting the FE spreadsheet- I think I caught up with everyone and replied to all of you with the email containing the spreadsheet attachment. If you PM'd me but did not receive an email reply with the spreadsheet yet, please PM me again in case I missed anyone by accident. Of course I'll also continue to send the spreadsheet out to anyone who asks from now until the cruise, just be advised that I'm not updating it until a week or so before the cruise.
