That's too darn bad! Can he retire once his unemployment runs out?

Linda, he has been talking about retiring for some time now so yes he probably will. In the long run it is probably better he got laid off because he got a severance package and can collect unemployment. He wouldn't have gotten that if he had retired. :thumbsup2

Hi Heather. Been hearing about your busy days and napping Tyler!!!! The port intensive side of the Med and Baltic cruises was one of the things tht put us off. Of course the cost of the Baltic was enough in itself of course!!!:lmao:

Holly and Tyler left this morning and I miss them already :(
The good news is Ill see them in 202 days on this cruise :)

I would never take back the sights we saw as they were amazing but def not enough ship time. I felt sorry for the first time cruisers because it didnt seem anyone got to relax and just enjoy the ship.

Did you see the Hawaii news? It sounds like a done deal except for the fact that the ship is Bahamain registered so not sure how they would get around that ion the Hawaiin islands.

WOW ! Thanks so much to you all for the feedback on what to do re. flights from LAX. :grouphug:

I'd rather not check-out of the DLH the night before, as the main reason we're staying there that night is for DS's birthday. I think what I'll do is book a later flight (say the 10.30am), and just "suck it up" that we won't be at WDW until about 9pm ;)

Oh, and trust me, we learnt the hard way about sharing a Super Shuttle. On our first flight into LAX, we shared with several others and it took f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to get to DL (we were the last stop), which when you've got 4 kids who are bursting at the seams to get to DL is a nigh-on hair-pulling exercise. We'll go with an exclusive hire. :thumbsup2 Having 6 in our family means the cost difference is negligible.

Onto quick replies...

DCL_FAN_TAC - sorry to hear about your daughter's friend :( How tragic :(

Granmaz - Sorry to hear about your neighbour :( I hope they are able to give him a decent quality of life with chemo.

threebrits - wow - two cruises so close together ! I'll bet the Med cruise was wonderful. I love the history of the UK / Europe - so I'm sure I'd love a Med cruise ;) No idea on the FE, as I've been AWOL for a few weeks - I'm definitely keen to take part, though.

LindaBabe - welcome back from NY - I'll bet you have plenty of gardening to do. We're in the midst of winter here, which means nary a blade of grass needs to be mown :woohoo:

Alan - have a safe trip. I'm afraid I have no idea when it comes to US sports teams :confused3 :)

That's it for now. I'm starting a new once-a-week job as the after-school carer at my younger kids' school this afternoon. Wish me luck ! It pays well, though (I wonder why..... :lmao: ).

Cheers,
Sally :)

Your right on so close together,I see lots of OT and call time for me in the next 6 months.
The sights were defintily something to see, they could skip Tunisia though and I think alot of people felt that way! Seeing all the historical sights was amazing though.
This is the cruise im really looking forward too though because I love the sea days and the ability to relax and enjoy the ship and drink BBC's LOL

Well it was lovely that you could have Holly and Tyler to stay. I know they have had a wonderful time.

I love the ship and wouldn't want to have to get off every day, but would feel the need to in the Med!!!!!

Yes, I quite fancy Hawaii.

Des,

:hyper2: ...Thought these colors were applicable to the big game tonight!!! :hyper2: Looks like a little debate on who will win...lol

There is no debate. Lakers Repeat. As to Hawaii, I think I figured that out. See it will be a 14 night cruise. L.A. to Vancuver in May and Vancuver to L.A. in Sept. If true, we will be on the Sept one as DW 40th is 2012. What a great way to spend the big 4-0. I think we may not even care about price. We were hoping to do a 7 night on one of the new ships, assuming one of them does a 7 night cruise, but if this is true the new shops will wait till 2013.

When I read the Honolulu times article though it sounded like it was going to be docking there from May to Sept though which would recquire 2 transpacifics which wouldnt be hard to go to Vancouver or Mexico on the way. If they stay and do the 7 day island cruises though they need to go to a foreign country in that time although I think NCL does this and there not US registry? Either way I want on that first one to Hawaii and that would be our 20th anniversary . Hubby says its going to make for alot of sea days and I think thats just fine with me. Im also thinking the Pacific might be alot rougher then Atlantic but we can just deal with that then to be on a first time cruise to Hawaii :)

The NCL ship that tours Hawai'i is American registered. (The ship that only does Hawai'i and no where else) It's the only cruise ship that is.

I took the artical as to say one day in May and one day in Sept. Also I beleve DCL will continue the summer Alaska sailings.

I did a 15 day Round trip Hawaii on RCI Radiance of the Seas in Sep. 07. We stopped in Mexico for 30 min enough to classify us as going to a foreign port. We left on a Friday from LA and did not reach Hawaii until Wednesday. First 2 sea days were rough. The adult pool was like a wave pool the waves were so high they ended up closing it. Wednesday -Monday night we had ports Kona, Hilo, Lahaina, and Honolulu with over night in Maui. Kona was fabulous with wonderful snorkeling. Hilo was the volcano. It had no activity so even are sail by saw just a flicker, we rented a car and drove around the big island and saw the volcano. With rental car and national park it was $50. Maui was wonderful lots of things to do. Did a horse back tour. Oahu we did the beach and a luau. We did a luau indep and saved $150. We left early Tues am around 2am and got to LA Sat am. The first sea day was nice the rest were bad. Barf bags placed in cabin and on the stairs. If you like sea days this is great. If you don't not the cruise for you. A lot of the ship go from LA to Hawaii and then to Vancouver. Then do Van- Hawaii and back to La. I am waiting on the price to come out before I make plans.

I would love to cruise to Hawaii but DH could not deal with the seas. We flew over in 1999 and had a grand time - I would love to go back.

Are the seas normally rough out to Hawaii? I love sea days, but would not like the seas too rough.

Having said that we are doing the WBTA in September.:lmao:

DCL-Fan are we on the same flight! We are coming from Oakland - flight out of Houston at 2:50.

We are on the 8:50pm flight on the 5th, arriving at 11:05 pm...I believe Carmie is on your flight with her family...I wish we could fly out that early but with DDs school commitment sadly we will be on the later flight! As long as we're on the ship before lifevest party, I'm happy:banana:

Granmaz...Atlantic in September, why NOTHING ever develops then:confused3, of course our Tortola cruise last August turned into a Western when we arrived at the port for check-in!:goodvibes

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for my friend's DH. He is having testing done today and tomorrow to see if it has spread.

We may be having to cancel this trip. My DH got laid off yesterday and we will have to put our heads together as to finances. Luckily he has been contemplating retirement (just not quite so soon) so we are really better off than a lot people. Our house is paid for so we have a roof and our finances are sound right now so we will just have to make a few adjustments (like having him around all the time :lmao::lmao:). We are probably better off right now than if he had retired since he was given a severance package and can collect unemployment.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your DH's job. At least he was planning for retirement anyway and now gets compensated for his job loss. Here is some pixiedust: for you :goodvibes

To all those with sad news, I will keep you in our prayers -- we too have had sad news this past weekend the Texas teen who fell to his death in South Africa while on holiday to the FIFA World Cup, was a friend of DD...tragic to lose such a cheery, vibrant young man:grouphug:life is precious!
Such a tragedy. It's always tragic to lose a friend or family member but when it's unexpected, I know that it can be harder. Several years ago, one of my friends/co-workers was murdered. I left work the day before and never said goodbye because I wasn't feeling well and she was out of her office. I'll never forget not telling her bye. Sad lesson learned because you never know when the last time you'll see someone is.

We're actually on the first Orlando flight out of Hobby that morning! We depart at 7:55 and have an arrival time of 11:00am. However, I noticed that there are several flights connecting to that one so who knows, there may be some other dissers on there with us :)

I can't remember if this has been asked so here goes: I'm on several cholesteral meds and multivitamin, calcium, fish oil etc. Do i need to pack them in a labeled container? I usually use a day to day pill organizer (and i'd pack the more days in snack bags). Will this do or do i need the original containers? This for both getting on the boat and getting on the planes. thanks!

You know what ? I think it's going to take me a full 6 months to get to know everyone's real names on the board here :lovestruc As such, I hope you don't mind if I use your user names for now :)

I survived the new job - just. (Thanks OrlandoBeagle :) ) Wow - get some of the younger boys together unsupervised for a nanosecond, and it spells trouble ! LOL ! Thankfully I have another p/time job, so between the two, there should be plenty of saving for our big trip. Oh, that reminds me - about how much is everyone budgeting per person for the cruise ? I should think we'll do shore excursions in most ports, and we're not *big* alcohol drinkers - maybe two drinks a day on holiday. Any other costs I'll need to budget for ? Onboard activities ? We're not "spa people" either.

I'm excited to hear about Hawaii, too - it's normally a stop-off for us on the way to mainland USA, but if there's a cruise, we may consider that instead. I'm already in the throes of working out our 20th anniversary trip in 2012 (just DH and I), and was planning on an Alaskan cruise for now. May have to put the HI plans on hold for a furutre year. So many holidays, so little time - especially when I keep thinking DD1 will be finished high school in 4 years' time !

Threebrits - I LOVE sea days, too. I've done plenty of cruises in the Pacific, but it's the same issue too - so many islands in a short space of time.

sak - sorry, I have no real idea about meds - I'm sure DH just packed his in their normal boxes / containers for our last trip ?

Hope you're all having a great day/evening. Gorgeous cool weather here today - dry, sunny, no wind, and about 60F.

Cheers,
Sally :)

I didn't see anything - where was this????

ask heather. she takes all those drugs, or probably did when we cruised. i don't remember her having to register them or anything. but she'd know if she took them all out of containers or not.

i know as CMs we have to register all medications (and all electronics), but as a guest, i'm not sure.

you take fish oil? stinky fish? ew....

skype me this weekend, when things with gpop settle into place, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later.

I put each day's worth of medicines into small plastic bags and carry them on. So far, it's never been an issue on international or domestic flights. If I had to bring all the bottles, it would take up half my carry-on. (Not really, but it would seem like it.) DH always takes his in the day-by-day pill organizers and he's never had a problem, either.

Alan must be a happy camper - the Lakers won tonight. Quite an exciting game! They were down by 13 in the third and won by 4.
