When we did DL in 07 the bus left at 530 am. Do not use Prime Time shuttle. They are horrible and took 90 mon to get from Port to DLH.

90 minutes sounds about right, depending on the time of day and how many stops they had to make in between. 45 minutes is the estimate if you are not taking a rideshare and not hitting any traffic.

if you are taking a rideshare, and driving anywhere in LA, you'll hit traffic, so 90 minutes isn't too bad.

if you are taking any shuttles, taxis, limos, vans, etc from DLR to LAX, ask if they are making any stops between that area and LAX. if not, ask them to avoid taking the 5, and suggest this route to minimize traffic:

91W
110 towards San Pedro (NOT towards LA, that brings you downtown, which driver should know)
You don't even actually get on the 110 before you merge off
405N
to LAX

this takes you away from the mess of the 5 and the 405 that can often exist between DLR and LAX.

i live about a mile and a half away from LAX, and worked at DLR.

what i'm trying to remember is how bad the traffic usually is in the morning going that route. I feel like it can still be pretty bad, but it's much better than the 5, which will be a parking lot at that time of morning. anything heading towards LA in the morning will be bad.

even though we only live less than a 10 minute (about 2 miles) drive from LAX, when we take the shuttle (if we are both traveling), it can take well over half an hour, depending on traffic and how many stops they have to make before us.

but thats what you get when you take a rideshare. a cab would have been probably about 45 minutes quicker, but the price also would have been WAY more.

HOUSTON, we have SWA airfare to MCO!!!:cool1::cool1: Alan, your paycheck should still clear:rotfl2: We have opted for the latest arrival on the 5th and will overnight at the MCOHyatt -- DD's school :teacher:has 'cleared' her absences as "Excused" & DH's surgery on heel/ankle was successful and he should be walking with a cane by January -- we are GO for launch! (Actually, I told them both that I was going with or without them...sort of glad they'll be able to join me!)

To all those with sad news, I will keep you in our prayers -- we too have had sad news this past weekend the Texas teen who fell to his death in South Africa while on holiday to the FIFA World Cup, was a friend of DD...tragic to lose such a cheery, vibrant young man:grouphug:life is precious!

Back to the happy:cheer2:...looking forward to PIF date & booking excursions, and packing...soon!!

Good news re the flight booking and helping keep alan on the cruise!!!:lmao:

Very sad news about the young man who died in SA. Life is precious indeed. Our very lovely neighbour has just this week been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer. It had already spread to his liver before any other symptoms had developed, so they aren't going to operate, just give him chemo to give him better quality of life. He is 51, and only started with symptoms(change in bowel habits) in early May.:sad2:

We are back from the Mediteranean and have friends we met from our first cruise here from Michigan....Med was good but VERY port intensive. Im so looking forward to this one so I might actually enjoy the days at sea.

Need to start thinking of FE ideas...anyone have any idea how many were looking at for FE?

Back to work and reality tomorrow so we can start saving for this one.

Sending pixie dust for all the health issues and worries:wizard:

Hi Heather. Been hearing about your busy days and napping Tyler!!!! The port intensive side of the Med and Baltic cruises was one of the things tht put us off. Of course the cost of the Baltic was enough in itself of course!!!:lmao:

Can't do SWA unless I want to go to Baltimore (am flying them home though) so I'm waiting for Jet Blue to open on January 5th and then I will decide if I will fly on the 4th or the 5th.

Where do you live? I"m in COlumbia. We'll do bwi both ways - waiting to see if we can get trip insurance before we get air tickets.

We may be having to cancel this trip. My DH got laid off yesterday and we will have to put our heads together as to finances. Luckily he has been contemplating retirement (just not quite so soon) so we are really better off than a lot people. Our house is paid for so we have a roof and our finances are sound right now so we will just have to make a few adjustments (like having him around all the time :lmao::lmao:). We are probably better off right now than if he had retired since he was given a severance package and can collect unemployment.

That's too darn bad! Can he retire once his unemployment runs out?

Just returned home from the vet..one of cats stopped eating and wasn't doing well. She had liver failure and had to be euthanized.

Life stinks sometimes! :sad1:

SO sad for you :( It's losing a member of your family - just rips your heart out. She'll be waiting for you at the rainbow bridge. (www.rainbowbridge.org)

We got ours from insuremytrip.com. Just need to see if I can exchange one of my new room mates for the husband I originally had listed.

We're safely back home in NY. 3 weeks away and our place is a jungle! Weeded two hours yesterday and two more today and haven't finished the front flower bed. Despite the weeding, it's still just SO nice being home! :woohoo:

Wow there has been a lot of bad news around here lately. To all who are haveing hard times, as my parents always say "it could always be worse". As for me. I am sitting in Chicago's Midway airport right now waiting for a flight to Manchester NH. On Friday I am seeing the Dodgers play in Fenway Park. To me that is a religious experance. The problem comes tomorrow night. I am a big Lakers fan and I will be almost in the heart of Celtics country. I already know there is no Lakers friendly bar in the area. The worst part is, I won't be able to celebrate when the Lakers Repeat tomorrow night.

WOW ! Thanks so much to you all for the feedback on what to do re. flights from LAX. :grouphug:

I'd rather not check-out of the DLH the night before, as the main reason we're staying there that night is for DS's birthday. I think what I'll do is book a later flight (say the 10.30am), and just "suck it up" that we won't be at WDW until about 9pm ;)

Oh, and trust me, we learnt the hard way about sharing a Super Shuttle. On our first flight into LAX, we shared with several others and it took f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to get to DL (we were the last stop), which when you've got 4 kids who are bursting at the seams to get to DL is a nigh-on hair-pulling exercise. We'll go with an exclusive hire. :thumbsup2 Having 6 in our family means the cost difference is negligible.

Onto quick replies...

DCL_FAN_TAC - sorry to hear about your daughter's friend :( How tragic :(

Granmaz - Sorry to hear about your neighbour :( I hope they are able to give him a decent quality of life with chemo.

threebrits - wow - two cruises so close together ! I'll bet the Med cruise was wonderful. I love the history of the UK / Europe - so I'm sure I'd love a Med cruise ;) No idea on the FE, as I've been AWOL for a few weeks - I'm definitely keen to take part, though.

LindaBabe - welcome back from NY - I'll bet you have plenty of gardening to do. We're in the midst of winter here, which means nary a blade of grass needs to be mown :woohoo:

Alan - have a safe trip. I'm afraid I have no idea when it comes to US sports teams :confused3 :)

That's it for now. I'm starting a new once-a-week job as the after-school carer at my younger kids' school this afternoon. Wish me luck ! It pays well, though (I wonder why..... :lmao: ).

Cheers,
Sally :)

Has there been any discussion of what internet access is likely to cost for this long of a trip? I'm going to need to have it to stay in touch with DH.

And why, when you look at the cost in the Passporter is Wonder 2x the cost of the Magic?

Well I am up here now. I have already seen one beat L.A. sign. I hate that. Say beat the Lakers. Don't say beat my city. That really gets to me.

Just wanted to share in the flight booking happiness- just booked my brother and I one-way from Philly to Orlando nonstop on USAirways for $110/each, including taxes/fees. I was very happy with this fare- I don't normally book this far out, but I couldnt pass it up. I'm silver preferred for US so our checked bags, 2 each, are free, and we have free confirmed preferred seat assignments. So happy we are officially booked! And I love getting into Orlando by 9:00 AM. I am a total early bird getting up for vacation on departure day, I love getting to the airport in the wee hours of the morning for an early flight, all excited and ready to go!

So we are still holding out for the return- still hovering around $800 for the nonstops from LAX to PHL, which is insane. San Diego nonstop to PHL is about $275, so most likely we'll just drive down there, enjoy a few hours in my college town, and fly back from there, but I'm in no hurry to book. We'll keep an eye out for the LAX fares to go down, and if they dont fall in a couple months, we'll book SAN.

So sorry to read all of the bad health news here. My thoughts are with you all.

DCL-Fan are we on the same flight! We are coming from Oakland - flight out of Houston at 2:50.

Trip insurance....must go check that... usually get it when I make final payment. Or at least I think I do....:lmao:

:thumbsup2:worship::thumbsup2:worship::thumbsup2: GO LAKERS!!!!

Go Celtics! :) (It was nice of you to use green in your message tho ;))
