I haven't tried to make it either, though I will one day!
We had the MacAllen tasting one of the nights, too... we're not big scotch drinkers, but that was good!

Day 13 – Thursday, March 7th – Puerto Vallarta

We were up pretty early this morning and had ordered room service to be delivered between 7 am and 7:30 am. We were up before the alarm went off though and were busy snapping photographs outside as the sun came up and we finished docking.

Room service arrived and we enjoyed a breakfast of cereal and English muffins in our cabin. Mum and Maureen ordered room service as well this morning.

It looked like it was going to be a gorgeous day as we finished getting ourselves ready for our excursion through DCL today which was the Mexican Cooking Experience.

I had originally booked us on a private Whale Watching tour but although the company had great ratings on Trip Advisor, they weren't giving me the warm and fuzzy feeling about us coming off a cruise ship, so I cancelled it a few weeks before we sailed and booked this instead. We met in Azure at 8:10 am and didn't have a long wait before we were shown down to our coach which was conveniently right next to the ship.

Our guide introduced herself and we started off with a short short drive to a market where she was going to pick up the masa to make the tortillas.

Scott got out and went to see what it was all about, but Mum, Maureen and I stayed on the coach which was incredibly lazy of me! As you can see, the first day of internet was captivating.

Scott got some good photographs of the market. It was fairly busy with locals.

I think this is the corn soaking to make the masa.

And this was the place that they bought it from.

Heading back to the bus there were some vendors along the sidewalk. Scott said he'd never seen such massive bunches of coriander/cilantro.

The coach ride the rest of the way was through very small roads, but I think we zig-zagged around a bit to kill a bit of time. We got to the venue, which was quite pretty, and had a short break before the cooking began to use the restroom or nose around.

They had set tables up underneath the trees for us to sit at, and there was a kitchen off to the side.

El Hefe.

OK, so after a bit of time to get ourselves situated we were brought the first set of ingredients to make pico de gallo.

We were also offered a non-alcoholic drink when we got there, I know I got the strawberry, I don't know what Maureen got - but here it is.

After some dicing and slicing we finally had our pico made and they brought around some tortilla chips for us to sample it with. I think Scott was the only one brave enough to put the jalepeno in. I de-seeded mine and put a little in.

This was the set up and they had a chef at the end table who was also making everything alongside us.

Next they brought around half an avocado for everyone to add to the remaining pico and make guacamole. Again more chips and more sampling.

Up next we were given some roasted tomato, onion and poblano pepper and a massive pestle and mortar to grind it up with. We had to share that between us so it took a while to do the grinding and quite a bit of elbow grease!

We threw in some fresh cilantro and onion and had our very own salsa. More chips....more sampling....

Scott bought us a couple of beers. I think we each got one drink ticket which was good for a margarita or a beer. I got a margarita first time around but they were pretty small.

We were shown how they make refried beans, but the big batch was whisked away to the kitchen to be finished off.

The next step was to make corn tortillas. They had one station set up to press the
tortilla and cook it on a griddle.

By now the sun was starting to make its way around and it was getting warm if you weren't in the shade. Thankfully our table was, but one of the other tables asked for it to be moved. The lady on the left was one expert tortilla maker - she made it look so easy.

The line took a long time to move seeing as there were quite a lot of us, and only one tortilla press. Plus, we all took about 10 times as long as the resident expert! Pressing it was the easy part, the hard part was getting it off the press and onto the griddle in one piece!!

We were now brought a poblano pepper, some cheese and a couple of toothpicks to make a poblano renello. Of course, Mr. Cheesephobe nixed the cheese, so his was literally just a pepper with toothpicks in it. This then had to be rolled in cornmeal and deep fried. The only downside was that the line to get this done was super long and slow. They really could have done with another station to do the frying, one guy with one pot really just wasn't enough with the amount of people. Here's the line into the kitchen. We were at the end of it and wrapped all the way around the corner.

This was the end result. To be honest, we were so full by now that Scott and I barely ate any of this. Mum didn't bother making hers at all, and I think Maureen made it but didn't eat it.

Scottt split his open and stuffed beans in it so it wasn't just a fried pepper.

We were all given some time to move over to a covered patio where they were going to give a tequila presentation. The grounds were pretty and very well kept.

They don't make tequila there but they had some to sample and purchase. Scott tried a few of them but the rest of us declined - we were just too full and my tummy was feeling a little off. It was also starting to get pretty hot by now.

This is the only photograph that I got (well, Scott got ) with the name of the place which was Rio Bendito. Someone told us that they also use it for weddings.

We got back into the coach which also was really hot as they hadn't run it get the AC working. I think the whole coach was full, sleepy and ready to get back to the ship. It didn't take long at all to get back and we were all happy to be back into our nice air conditioning! We had another surprise waiting for us in our cabins from room service.

We sat outside and waited for sail away. Luckily we were in the shade so it was pleasant to sit out there.

And then we were treated to the most incredible sighting of a whale and her calf. It was beyond amazing. The mother was lobtailing the water, and then we saw the baby breach alongside her. Scott got some great photos and Maureen got a video. Everyone was out on their veranda and the cameras were just going like crazy.

Eventually the pilot boat went over and they disappeared. Everyone was disappointed that the show had ended. I was so happy that we had got to see whales after the cancelling of the whale watching tour. It was magical.

We sailed away from Puerto Vallarta and we were on full alert to watch for more whales.

Our patience for watching and waiting paid off and we saw lots of spouts as the whales came to the surface, although most were some distance away. Scott managed to catch a few photos, but we saw a lot, at least 20 I would say.

We finally pulled ourselves away from the whale watching extravaganza and we all went to see the crew talent show tonight in the Walt Disney Theater.

It was a packed house by the time the lights went down.

The show was excellent and it was hard to believe that a server in the dining room could basically play the piano like a concert pianist. So much talent among so many different levels of the crew.

As we walked out of the theater the sun was setting and it was a beautiful sunset, so we popped outside and got a quick photo.

And then we went back in to the area around Preludes to meet the crew that had performed. I had to get a photo of Jo and Natalie as the Spice Girls.

Tonight was the animation show in Animators palate. This had become one of my least favorite menus due to the appetizer/soup selection but tonight we had the Animator's rotational menu it seemed. I had the pasta truffle pursettes, cheddar and broccolini soup and blackened chicken salad.

Scott had sashimi tuna and also the chicken salad.

Mum had the salmon, and Maureen had the soup and lamb (no photo of the lamb...of course! )

Our animations came to life, it's a cute show.

Charlie gave us our crayon brain teaser of the night, but none of us wanted dessert today.

We went to bed right afterward as everyone was tired or not feeling great. Mum had started the head cold and Scott and I were still nursing the dodgy tummy stuff. So it was an early night for everyone today. We did have this cute Unicorn waiting to see us to bed though.

Day 14 – Friday, March 8th – Cabo San Lucas



We were awake early this morning! None of us had been to Cabo before, so we were all looking forward to another new-to-us port. By the time we woke up we were already arriving and so we went out onto the veranda to see what was going on. It was a beautiful sunrise.



Cabo was looking sleepy with the early morning sun causing a haze.



We ordered coffee and sat out on the veranda to enjoy the morning. The Ruby Princess was also in port today. Our room service guy told us that he had worked on her before he came to work for DCL, and that he thought she was on her way up to Alaska. We wouldn't have known either way, so his information seemed good to me!



The early morning coffee view wasn't half bad.



Mum wasn’t feeling well today with the yucky head cold so she ordered cereal from room service while Scott, Maureen and I went up to Cabanas for breakfast. Here's the selections of the day for Scott and I.





The view from the other side of the ship was beautiful.



On our way back from breakfast we stopped at the drink station and got a combination of hot drinks for Mum to see if anything would make her throat feel a bit better. She decided that the lemon and ginger tea seemed to be the one that she liked the best.

Our excursion today was with DCL. I had booked the Harbor Cruise and Scenic Stop as I couldn't find anything else that stood out to me, and it seemed an easy going tour which was just up our alley. The tour was scheduled for 11:15 am but instead of meeting on the ship, we were meeting on the pier. We had plenty of time so we went for a walk up on deck 10 to look around, especially as Mum hadn't seen the view from that side yet.











Note to self, if we ever do this itinerary again. Cabo is the day to hit the pools. They were E.M.P.T.Y.!!







We knew that we had to tender to get to the pier for our excursion and at about 10:15 am they announced that it was already open tender so we went and gathered our bags and left at about 10:30 am to allow plenty of time. There was no wait at all for a tender and we were on our way to the pier by 10:40 am. It was the first time that we had tendered using the deck that attaches to the ship with stairs, so that was new and interesting!



The ride only takes about 5 minutes, but we snapped some photographs along the way. Mum had been offered a seat as soon as you stepped onto the tender boat and I sat with her, while Maureen and Scott were sitting downstairs.



It was a tad windy but I tried to get a selfie - it sort of worked out.



And then one of the crew offered to take one of the two of us with the ship in the background....yup, windy! You can see I'm trying to hold my hair down, without much luck!

Meanwhile Scott was taking up the slack for the team in the photography department.

Plenty of yachts in the harbor for those that have a few extra pennies to chuck around for a vacation. Maybe next time.







The pier had plenty of seating, although it wasn't really clear where you had to go to meet up for the tour. There was a table set up with a sign for Port Adventures check in, but nobody there. We waited quite a while for someone to show up. In the meantime, photographs happened.

Someone finally showed up to get the ball rolling for the tour. It took a while to get everyone organized and in line for the first part of the tour which was the harbor cruise. We stood quite a while waiting, but thankfully it was in the shade. After about 30 minutes we were walked along the pier to our boat, which was large and had several decks. We decided not to climb all of the stairs but elected for the back on the second deck, and kept our fingers crossed that we would be in the shade.



There was commentary that you could hear if you wanted to sit inside, but it seemed a shame to not be sitting outside to really enjoy the view, so we lived with not knowing what we were looking at.

We started off the way we had just come on the tender.





We saw lots of sea lions trying to catch a ride on the fishing boats coming back in, they usually had a pelican or two along for the ride as well.





This might be hard to see but there were roped off areas where people were snorkeling that we passed on our way back out.



The boat made it's way to Land's End and the Los Arcos rock formation.

There were lots of water taxis there, which was the other option I had considered instead of booking this tour.









Another lovely hair photo from me. Someone did come around to take photographs that you could purchase, but it wasn't any better than any of these, so we passed on it.









After bobbing around out there for enough time for everyone to get photographs, we made our way back past the Wonder and the Princess cruise ships.







We then swung around and went back towards the coast and back to the pier. I have to be honest here, this part was very underwhelming to me. We really didn't see much more than we could see from the ship. But, it was nice to get some close up photographs with us in them.





Back at the pier we were walked off the boat and through the port where we lined up again to get on a motorcoach for the driving portion.







The coach looked very new and was in great shape. The AC also worked really well.



It wasn't a long drive before our first stop which was at a resort overlooking Cabo. I don't remember the name of it now.

It was still windy. At least it wasn't me with the crazy hair this time!





This stop included a complimentary beer, soda or water. Scott and I each got a beer (they were baby size and so cute!) and Mum and Maureen both got water. We had about 30 minutes here but there wasn't really any shade, so we took a look around and headed back up to where the bathrooms were, which was on the way out.







This upstairs part was where they were holding the Salsa y Salsa excursion. It looked like it would have been fun to try, we will have to try it next time. While we were all waiting to use the bathroom we also ran into someone from the UK that was working there, she spoke excellent spanish, which had me impressed and jealous all at the same time.



There was a lady from the Salsa class in the bathroom that was giving back her margaritas and salsa to the porcelain gods. I felt bad for her. It's so much fun to have all you can drink margaritas.....until it isn't. Her husband was standing outside waiting for her and I gave him all the ginger chews I had in my purse. I bet he thought I was nuts! Ha ha I have no clue if they would have helped her out at all, but I knew she would be hating life for the rest of the day. #neverdoallyoucandrink <- trust me.

We all got back onto the coach and started off for the last stop, which was a glass factory.







There was a TON of glassware inside, it reminded me of Pier 1. We were shown to an area where we could sit to watch a demonstration of glass blowing.



The guy started with a blob of glass and blew it and formed it into a bowl. The whole process couldn't have taken him more than fifteen minutes, it was pretty impressive!









On your way to the gift shop you passed through this room which was amazing with all the colored glass.







The gift shop didn’t hold anything that appealed to any of us that we could afford. There was a lovely nativity made out of glass but the price was crazy high (I don't remember what it was but something in my memory says it was over $1,000) and then it would have been a hassle getting it back home. Back on the bus we were told that we were running late (go figure - we were so late starting) and so there was no time to shop as we got back and it was a hustle to get onto the tender. It was right about the time for the last tender as we got back. Of course, by now we were starving, so we dropped our bags in the cabins and went to get some food from Deck 9. Correction....food AND drink...it was thirsty work being gone all that time, didn't get any pics of the food....but....



It wasn’t long before we began to move, so we decided to go back to our cabins to watch us sail away. Right as we rounded the Arch rock formation and left the sea of Cortez to go into the Pacific the weather instantly cooled quite a bit.













We didn’t stay outside too long as it was really windy and the temperature was just a tad on the "too chilly" side. The main show tonight in the Walt Disney Theater was the premier of Captain Marvel, and we decided to give it a miss. We went down to the gift shop and took another look around.

OK, so this is funny. Someone from home had asked me to see what the cruise ears looked like so I went to try and find them. The CM told me that they were available "on request" only so they don't have them out on display. She went into a super-secret stock room to get them to show me. So now imagine the scene, she's gone and got "the goods" and she and I are talking like we have some shady drug deal going down. I asked her what you had to do to request them..... she told me that I had to..... ask her! Am I the only one that finds that just hysterically funny and Disney marketing at it's finest???!!!!



We went back to our cabins and hung out until it was time for dinner. Mum was soldiering on with her head cold but she wasn't feeling great. Tonight we were back in Tianas for the Mardi Gras menu.



I did not take good notes tonight of who ate what, I guess my trip report diligence was beginning to wear off. Here's what we had in no particular order but with some guesswork along the way.

I can rule Mum and Maureen out for this one - they don't eat shrimp.




No cheese for Scott, so this had to be mine or Maureen's (or both).


Louis came for a quick visit while we were eating.



This is Scott's, I can remember he wasn't sold on it.



Mum's (because she's holding the plate) and my guess is that Maureen had the same thing because it's right up her alley.



Tiana came around for a quick chat and I actually managed to get a decent photo!



And desserts...I know the chocolate cake was mine because it's one of my favorites.



Hmmm...but then again....I usually am the one ordering ice cream!! See....this is why you need notes!!

The mardi gras parade took place, although we declined to help our poor servers out and participate!

We got done with dinner by about 9:45 pm and I managed to convince everyone to have some photographs taken in the lobby seeing as there were hardly any lines.







Donald and Goofy were up on Deck 4, so off we went...



Seeing as we were already up on 4, I wanted to take a quick look in Shutters and see if there were any photos we hadn't seen yet. We ran into Goofy and Donald who were just leaving, they were having a quick fight with Stitch.



Then Daisy joined in and they all had a bit of a dance. They managed to sucker in a couple of guests towards the end as well and it all got a bit chaotic.







Back in the cabin it was time for bed and we were greeted by this cute little wiener dog.



We put on the TV and watched Hercules for a short while....edited: This is why we don't do Disney trivia - I've been told this is Emperor's New Groove!!! Thanks @disneyfaninaz!



And then, because it was so nice and cool outside, I opened the veranda door so we could listen to the waves with the cool ocean breeze. Ahhh.... But.... after about 5 minutes I had to jump back up and close the door because there was no way we could sleep that way.

Day 15 – Saturday, March 9th – At sea day #7



So, here we are. Our last day on board, and despite it being 14 nights, it still was rolling around all too quickly. Scott and I had a lazy lay-in before ordering coffee from room service.

The weather didn't look too great, which is exactly how I like it when I am about to get kicked off a cruise ship!



We all went up to Cabanas for breakfast but I will admit that this is where my note taking came to an end. I've got photos, and they are of half eaten food, the trip reporting is going the way of the cruise....pretty much over! I do know that it was time for me to get things that I had been thinking about eating....proof below.





We all went down to Crown & Fin for general knowledge trivia, we were a bit early and it was empty when we got there. I'm pretty sure we didn't do well, we needed my nephew, Paul, with us!



Scott and I decided we wanted to see Captain Marvel, and there was a showing at noon, so we scooted off for that. I'm not sure what Mum and Maureen did while we were gone though. I actually enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would, although Scott said he could tell that I wasn't impressed. I was impressed I stayed awake!



They had made an announcement that even though it wasn't in the navigator, they were going to hold a Diaper Dash in the atrium. We went to see what was going on. I had read on our FB group that people had petitioned guest services to hold one because someone on the FB group had been really looking forward to it, and coaching their baby for months. It turned out that they were the ONLY baby!! So, they had Daddy crawling races, and toddler races to make up for it. While it was entertaining it wasn't anywhere near as fun as the baby races. I felt a bit sorry for the Dad's - you know they were hating every minute of it!





Mum and Maureen left the racing peeps and went off to watch Mary Poppins Returns in the Buena Vista Theater at 2:30 pm. We wandered around and ran into Belle who was cruising around on Deck 4.



The ship was really quiet today. Lots of people in that last day, laid-back mode.



Speaking of laid back....Scott said he's never done a port hole pose. He has now! He's such a goof.



He and I ended up in Crown and Fin and decided to play Backgammon for a little while. I don't think we played all cruise, which is somewhat strange now that I'm typing it because I'm shocked Scott and Maureen didn't play!



Yummy mojito for me and Blue Moon for Scott. I think this was my first mojito of the cruise...what on earth is going on!! I need to go back for a do-over.



While we were down there, they switched the Fun in the Sun adult activity to a trivia session due to the yucky weather up on the pool deck. Poor Jo was also suffering from the cold/crud/sore throat and sounded terrible. It was really doing the rounds on the ship for sure.



We met back up with Mum and Maureen in the cabin and we all started the chore of packing. I think we had all been semi-packing our dirty clothes and so it really didn't take any of us very long. It's still miserable though, even after two weeks! We all got done and had time to relax before heading to the Walt Disney Theater for the last time to watch Disney Dreams.



We had all purposefully done any shopping so that we didn't have to hit the gift shops on the last night, but they really weren't that bad, everyone had already spent all their money! We went to the last trivia session, which was another 80's night and was in Azure. It was a really low turn out tonight though, I guess everyone was packing or just doing last minute things, and Jo wasn't feeling good. It was an appropriate end....queue the sad music...



Tonight we were back in Triton's for dinner and it was the Captain's Gala menu, which seemed a little strange/different. I got the shrimp and Scott got the prosciutto.





Maureen got the oxtail soup and Mum couldn't decide between the oxtail and the onion soup, so Sasha brought her both.





I got the lobster tail, and Scott got a combo of lobster and venison.





Maureen got a salad as well, so I'm thinking she just had soup and salad tonight. I know this menu isn't her favorite because of all the seafood.



Desserts tonight were a creme brulee, apple pie, and chocolate lava cake. I don't remember who ordered what, but I think we shared them around.







Sasha gave us our crayon puzzle tonight...he was quite tickled with himself.



And I don't remember the question...but here is the answer, and if I am remember right, I got it!!! Finally!!!



We took some quick photos with Maggie and our servers, but I don't have any with Mum and Maureen in them, which just goes to show how lax we were being today!



Sasha got Scott with the plates...always funny no matter how many times you see it!



Mum and Maureen decided to head to bed right after dinner. Scott and I went and stood in line to see Cinderella, Suzy and Perla as I was determined to get another couple of photographs. It wasn't a very long line, which was just as well or I probably wouldn't have convinced Scott to stay for it. I had to laugh when I saw the photos because they had taken them of Scott giving hugs.







Despite trying to make the day last as long as possible, we finally headed off to bed. We had this crabby little fellow waiting for us.



Scott and I still had one of our big suitcases with us because we had to get the liquor that Mum and Maureen had bought in Grand Cayman first thing in the morning, and so we decided to keep one suitcase back to pack it in. We were just getting some final things put away when I got a call from Shutters to say that my thumb drive with our photographs was ready and so I popped down to get that. It was nice to know I didn't have to deal with it in the morning.

Day 16 – Sunday, March 10th – San Diego & Debarkation

We were all up and about early this morning. There's no getting around the fact that it's time for the fun to be over and so you may as well just pull that Bandaid off! It was about 6 am when I stepped outside and took some photographs of us docking in San Diego and it was chilly!! I was really glad that we had jackets at the ready.





The booze was retrieved from Crown and Fin and we got that packed. There was some kind of marathon or race on that we could see from our veranda but it was all being packed up by the time we headed off to breakfast.







We managed to fight our way down to Triton's for breakfast through the usual chaos of debarkation. We didn't have flights until after noon and so we weren't in any rush and I like to say goodbye to our servers on that last morning.





Last food photos...an omelet for me and ham and eggs for Scott. The others are on their own, I have no idea what they had!





And all too soon it was time to say goodbye, grab our bags and head off the ship. It was just before 9:30 am when we walked off, so I'd say we did pretty well in stringing it out as long as possible.



We had to wait a few minutes for the elevator to take us down to customs and so it was a good photo op.



Customs and immigration was a breeze with no wait at all and we found our luggage without much difficulty, although one rogue bag had us pondering for a minute until Scott spotted it. We had DCL transportation booked and the bus was ready and we got straight on it.

So long Disney Wonder...it's always a fun time.



I took this photo to let myself know what time we were on the bus and heading to the airport but it is off by an hour because the clocks went forward last night for Daylight Savings and they hadn't adjusted it yet. Thankfully we didn't have to change our time on the ship and we got the extra hour!



All of us were going to Houston and then my sister was flying straight on to Knoxville, so it was nice to hang out and get on the plane together. Maureen and I got some snacks and water for the plane and we settled in for our wait. DCL "Shopping Guy" was also at the airport and we had a brief chat with him. Our flight was on time and the journey was uneventful. I did manage to snap one last photo of the Wonder as we were taxiing to the runway though.



Thanks for everyone that followed along on our WONDERful cruise through the Panama Canal. It really was just a fantastic two weeks. Maybe we'll "do it the other way" one day.

I loved your trip report! A DCL Panama Canal cruise is on our bucket list...once my youngest graduates high school in 2022...

DH loves actual cameras, I'm sure he'd have been searching for the nearest camera store at the first port as well. (I'm happy to finally have a phone that takes good photos...although the real camera does better for distance and movement.)

Thank you. It is definitely a good trip to have on your bucket list. Despite all the drama of him trying to fix his camera, I’m glad he got another one as, for him, it really does make his trip even more enjoyable.
