Years and years ago, this was code for being gay.

"Are you a friend of Dorothy?"

"Why yes I am!" (think Wizzard of Oz)

Well a lot of Cruise Lines have special meets for "Friends of Dorothy".

Great move!

But my question is, isn't it time for just a plain old "Gay Cruisers Meet"?

Are people gonna picket or what? Why do they have to put it in "code"?

Isn't that what the P-House is for? :rolleyes1

That being said, I have seen different phrases used in different markets. A cruise company may advertise in say The Advocate as a gay cruise, but the same company may be a bit more subtle in other media.

I'm a fan of the gay print ads with the "Roving Gnome" myself. :lmao:

We just returned from a RC cruise this weekend and we had a FOD meet listed on the community board. To be honest, I was kinda glad they called it that because it helps keep those out that would only show up to harass or cause drama to the meet. We overheard a lot of straight people saying, "what is Friends of Dorothy mean?" Turns out most of them thought it had to do with film production. :lmao:

How about something catchier? Like "Big Honkin' **** Hoe-down!!"

well dang this thing! I can't say **** on the gay board? It rhymes with como!

Nope! And you cant say the name of the guy who played Burt in the movie Marry Poppins either!

You know....Dick Van ****!

I wish I could find a video of that TV skit (think it was MadTV) about Colonel Angus...

We were on a Princess Cruise in April ... their meets are called "GLBT get Togethers."

On Cunard's QM2, they are also called "Friends of Dorothy" meetings.

I'm kind of glad they call them FOD meetings - as said above - no need for anyone to show up just to make trouble. We've showed up at a couple of these on RCCL and NCL - not many others show up. We're cruising on Carnival and they have them at 11:30 at night :lmao: That's almost bedtime! :rotfl:

We ran across a lot of younger guys who were "Who is Dorothy, and why does she have so many friends?" :lmao: We had to explain! And ya, on a cruise, 11:30 is getting towards bedtime! :confused3
