frequent flier miles - wait list - other airports

We will be traveling in November. I'm trying to book four seats using frequent flier miles. the only flights i can get are with two plane changes. I called Delta and the rep suggested that i book the available flights and then put myself on a waitlist for a direct flight.

I've also looked into flying into Melbourne, Tampa or Daytona beach and it is the same scenario where we would have to change planes at least once and probably twice.

has anyone ever done this? does the waitlist work?

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Since you are in NJ are you only flying out of newark? Maybe you could check philly or jfk depending upon where you live. Are you ff miles only good on delta. I heard they were hard to get a seat on. We just cashed in our miles for aa, lga to dfw for about 2 months from now. They said there were no seats on the flight I wanted going, so we have to go on a later flight, but I got the exact flight we wanted coming home, thats only 8 weeks and you are doing 16 weeks. Also you might want to consider a different frequent flyer awards program in the future. Maybe if you are going during jersey week that might account for it too. Good luck.
