free upgrades/POR

Has anyone ever gotten a free upgrade at POR? if so how did you get it if you don't mind me asking...thanks

Upgrades are usually given out because rooms have been taken out of inventory for maintenance problems or because a room category is overbooked. You are unlikely to get one just by smiling sweetly or asking for a freebie. Pixie dust is much more rare than reports on the Dis would lead you to believe. If a Diser gets an upgrade, you're likely to see it here. You don't see the hundreds of thousands who just get what they booked.

In almost 40 years of visiting, we've been upgraded ( from standard view to river view) twice. And we didn't ask for it. It just happened.

I've never been upgraded but I generally arrive early on check in day. I've heard that the later it gets, there is a better chance of a room change but it's sometimes a downgrade and not an upgrade.

Second visit, got upgraded from standard room to royal room parking lot view. I'd sent in the fax just asking for ground floor I think and when we got there we were assigned our room. And it was ground floor. Weirdly, so much quicker to food than royal river view because river view we had to backtrack but parking lot view we just walked to the path, no backtracking.

This could be considered an upgrade. We always book pool view. Last time we got pool view in a preferred building without asking. Was awesome.

We were surprised in 2013 @ the Beach Club. We booked a standard view room because it was a big deal splurge for us to be at the Beach Club. We checked in and no one said a word until they pushed a special button on the elevator and escorted us to our Club Level Standard View Room. It was some seriously amazing Pixie Dust. I couldn't believe what was happening. Oh my Disney!

In-laws got an upgrade they didn't want at POFQ from Garden View To River View In April of this year. They had booked Garden to be closer to the bus stops but enjoyed the River View Just the Same.

Both of these were given, not asked for...

However, we have asked after being assigned to a room to be moved closer to a bus stop and received an upgrade before from standard view to garden view at POR.

The first year the Royal Rooms were open, friends of mine got upgraded to the Grand Floridian because the royal rooms weren't ready on time, but she knew like a week ahead of time she'd been moved (they called her and gave her the pick of I believe three different resorts, and she picked GF) But that was because they overbooked the Royal Rooms and not enough of them were done.
