Apologies if this has already been posted (search won't work on my phone) but have just applied for Halifax's Clarity credit card as its free to use abroad. A good alternative to nationwide's products who will charge from November on. Thought it may help someone :)

Great tip for anyone going to DLP.

It's the same for the Santander Zero credit card which I used on our recent trip.

The Post office is another free to use card:thumbsup2

When did Nationwide start charging? Our statement (received today) still shows that EU transactions are charge-free, is this going to change?

It changes from the 1st Nov I think. This is why I was with nationwide - had main account and c card with them. I was very disappointed by the change .

. I think that's why Halifax have introduced this new deal to take advantage of the gap left by nationwide. There are also no cash withdrawal fees which is handy and quite unusual I think for a credit card.

Am I right in thinking that Nationwide will only charge the debit card users & keep the credit card the way it is? I know the reason why they are doing it to the current accounts as it costs them a lot of money for people to only use it for when they go abroad.

Be careful with the cash withdrawals on a credit card as you will still pay a different rate of interest as its a cash advance & the interest is charged the day you take the money out, you just don't pay a fee to withdraw the money

I thought that too.

Also, be aware if you have a Santander zero and only use it for holidays as they will charge an annual fee if it's not used. The best credit cards for overseas use are now Halifax Clarity and Post Office.

Apologies, you are right - the cc changed a while ago to a 1% fee outside of the EU which annoyed me at the time because I use it in Florida. Still no fee for France at the mo, I don't think.

I know they say that its costing them for those who only use it for holidays, but that wasn't me. I put everything with them because of their foreign policy, even mortgage, don't see why they couldn't just charge those who don't use it during the rest of the year.
