Can anyone recommend a reliable website for free music downloads?

I have used Limewire in the past but had problems with that site.

I don't think there is a truely reliable free mp3 download, unless its from the artists themselves.

acesupercoolme:
Its true to an extent downloading is illegal, unless your buying the download or the artist themselves are putting stuff up for download (an example of this is Emilie Autumn who once had her debut album for download for free...or you could buy a proper CD and get the Enchant puzzle). Also I love your Avatar :-D.

what my mom did for me was if you do cokerewards.com and rack up some points then you go on to rewards and you can see a free month of rhapsody! Also you can get as many songs as you want. I did it and i got like 45 songs on my mp3 .

I Hope This Helps!

Why don't you just BUY the music?
Isn't downloading it illegal?

Agreed 150%

Im a big music buff so I OWN a lot of music (Which ally hates :D) and I have bought or downloaded LEGALLY each and everyone. Now thats over $1500 worth of music, and yeah thats a lot. But if you really support the artists and care that they keep making music, then I say just buy it. I know that the artists themselves get very little and most goes to the record lables, but wouldnt you want to give atleast SOMETHING to them so they can keep throwing out music for you, then giving them NOTHING and possibly screwing up your PC? Im also pretty much a CD owner too, but i wont get into that :D

I have to agree, downloading is actually making it harder for alot of artists...and I have an example (like always haha):
Angelspit's debut album had lots to it, then their 2nd album had to be simplier because they (and the label) couldn't afford to do something like Krankhaus again...the label actually folded the end of last year because of people downloading the artists (not just Angelspit but other bands like The Cruxshadows too) and they just couldn't afford to carry on. And not only that but it also puts CD prices up because less people are buying them and the companies still need the money...one label actually raised their prices to £24!!!!

I don't use a program usually unless it's torrents and I use limewire. Otherwise, I am apart of communities on lj that provide me with downloads of the albums I want.

Of course I hate it!
It's all like.. Nickleback, Aerosmith, TSO, and stuff.
You didn't capitalize my name either.

Yeah, all my music is bought.
I would never download it like that.
How are these musicians going to keep producing albums if they don't have the money to do it since everyone's downloading it and not actually buying the album?

Sorry, I don't know where you can get free downloads.
Most of my music is CDs.
I've download about.. 3 songs onto my iPod from iTunes, and the rest are from CDs.

As Ally said, how are your favourite artists going to produce more music if you're not buying their albums? :confused3

Don't do illegal downloads.

I used to download off of Limewire, but I stopped. I mean, like everyone has said, your not supporting the band or whatever if your doing that. iTunes cost like 79p a song (well for me), that is basically nothing! You also know what your getting is virus-free and peace of mind.

I mainly stopped because a teacher at school told me in the UK, they are cracking down on illegal downloads. Basically you get warned three times, by post, then they can cut off your internet connection. I didn't even know this was true, but apparantly so. I don't know whether this will be similar in other countries though..

I agree with the posters.

I generally use iTunes, but I also buy the c.d., or if the library has it, get it from there (rather than spend $24.99 on Phantom of the Opera OBC).

iTunes is $0.99 here, Ashleigh. The cards come in $15, $25, and $50 (or 3 $10 ones, so that's $30).

I use iTunes for the most part, but I'll admit to having a couple sites favourited for the songs that I want to "try before I buy."

Generally, if I want to support the artist I'll buy the CD/single. Sometimes, though, I just want to see how the song sounds the whole way through, and because my computer hates YouTube, I use the sites. I'll listen to the song, then download it. If I really like it, I'll buy a couple others from iTunes. That way, everybody gets their money.

Puh-lease. Some of my favorite artists produced their own albums, with no help from record labels, and they seem to be able to create new albums quite fine. I'd rather get rid of all the processed crap music anyway. Plus, anyone really crippled by the influx of downloading wasn't making a lot of money off of CDs anyway. An artist only gets around 30% profit if someone actually buys the CD, so if someone sells 1000 records, and makes 3.50 a record...350 bucks isn't gonna do a lot in the long run, sorry. Most musicians make their money by promoting something (a lot of the pop-punk bands promote glamour kills clothing for example), merchandising ($40 for a cheaply made hoodie), and touring. Look at someone like the Jonas Brothers, who made what? 80 million from striking a deal with live nation for touring? Something like that. The ONLY time I buy CDs is from the bands themselves at shows.

Also, there are PLENTY of albums out of print. Is it wrong for me to download that, seeing that I can't buy it anywhere? What about demos that artists don't SELL? Or unreleased tracks?

All my artists product there own stuff...however with downloading sooner or later they won't be able to afford to go to a recording studio to do this. Angelspit are a great example of this (yet again) their label went under because of the whole downloading thing, they weren't in it for the money they were in it for the passion of their music (that sounds cheesy when I write it haha). In order for them to record a new album they had to raise the price of their merchandise and they haven't been able to tour since 2007.

Then I'm not sure as I genrally listen to bands who are on independent labels, so the artists generally get their fair share....though I might add these artists actually use the money for the fans (an example being Emilie Autumn any money she makes she puts into her tours/recording and stuff for the fans...her shows are theatrical so she relies on that dedication or her shows wouldn't be the wonderful thing they are).

I'll agree that some out-of-print releases are exceptable for download (depending on how long they've been out-of-print of course, as some bands will re-release their out-of-print stuff). Demo's are fine as they aren't actually copyrighted by a label and the band wouldn't have made any money on them anyway as they are demo's which are generally just used to promote a band :-).

Again I think depending on label is a thing aswell, alot of the labels on my band have this really good idea that they have a few full length songs from a band's release up so people can download it, if they like it in the future they'll buy the album. If you don't like it delete it from your computer...but again this is from independent labels, who are very different to major labels who are more in it for the money than the music....

Artists do make their money for touring top acts get paid like 50,00= a show and if it's like madonna you get paid loads for one perfomance, merchandising etc.

Demos that artists don't seel brings up a really good point.

Christina aguilerra had one that she didn;t want out so you could only get back bootleg marts or downloading.

Unreleased tracks are sometimes better like neyo has a like 30 i have seen so far which i have on my computer

and A LOt of albums go out of print quick it usually depends on sales. like the jb( even tho i hate them ) first album is already out of print.

Shakira's first 2 albums only has 2000 copies out there

I say download but support buy going to their concerts ,buying their merchandise.

PLus artists make more if the produce and write their own stuff like kanye makes more let;s Rihanna
