With the way Free Dining has always worked, do you have to purchase both accomodations and tickets or just accomodations for the free dining?

I ask because we have some compensation tickets that I'd love to be able to use with Free Dining if it's offered later this year.

I'm no expert on WDW but pretty sure you must purchase a package which includes the room at rack rate and tickets to qualify for the free dining promotion. Maybe you wouldn't have to buy tickets for all the days though to get the free dining. I'm not sure how that works.

FD packages require room at rack rate and a minimum of 2 day tickets for everyone in the room 3 years old and up. If you don't need the tickets for this trip you can save them for a future trip.

You could get a ticketless package if you have an AP, DVCer staying on points or using military tickets. I'm not sure what compensation tickets are, but I assume they were complimentary so they would not qualify.

To apply a free dining discount to your reservation, you must be booked under a Magic Your Way packages that includes room, tickets and dining. Free Dining packages have a 3 night minimum booking, 14 day maximum booking and 2 day base ticket requirement.
