Hi all,

Just returned from WDW this afternoon and was on the Dining Plan. We stayed at Port Orleans - Riverside and had a blast (and saved a ton of money). I will start this post off taking about $ and reviews and then end off with some dining tips & tricks.

I will start off by saying that a friend of mine and I went and our room had a credit of 12 snacks, 12 counter services, and 12 dinners. Basically our counter service meals everywhere we went would have ran us about $12 USD each no matter where we ate and regardless if we used a counter service as a breakfast or a lunch. For dinner, this is where we definately saved the most money. Here is a breakdown of restaurants and how much we would have paid each is USD:

Cinderella's Castle - $37
Boatwrights - $25 (I skipped dessert)
Le Cellier - $50
Ohana's - $27
Alfredo's - $37

Cinderella's Castle: Sorry to say it but the food really wasn't great. I met up with my mom & dad, my brother and his girlfriend for dinner and my parents said the steak was okay but the rest of us thought the food was mediocre. The service definately was not very good. The atmosphere was nice and it was a pleasure to see Cinderella. Do not order the seafood stew, the scallops were not cooked.

Boatwrights: Ribs are yummy. It was convenient because it was at the hotel. The portions are HUGE!

Le Cellier: Go to you consierge and make reservations if you can't get them by phone. I did right when we checked in and found an opening and switched our reservations. The best filet mignon I have ever had in my life! The cheddar cheese soup is simply amazing and the service was teriffic. We tried to get there twice, but there were no openings.

Ohana's: Always a spot I hit when I'm at WDW. We sat at table 310 (I believe) right at the window and saw the fireworks show "Wishes" right there. The food was great and having the lazy suzan in the middle of the table is great! If you time your meal so that you are there about an hour or so before the fireworks, you will have time to eat and enjoy the fireworks. Is a great place for the family and is interactive for the kids.

Alfredo's: Italy is a good restaurant to take the family to (as well as Ohana's and Le Cellier) because the restaurant is fun and the kids seem to like pasta. The food was really good (apparently the fettucini alfredo is amazing). I had the lasagne which was good (the portion was too big). Our waiter was nice (lots of good looking male employees there..... lol)

The Dining plan was great. It was too much food though. What my friend and I did was often share a counter service meal for breakfast, sometimes share a counter service for lunch (depending on how hungry we were) and eat our own dinner. If you use a counter service meal as your breakfast, you still get a "dessert" with that meal. Therefore for breakfast you could get a omlette with potatoes as well as a super big danish or cinnamon bun or a bowl of fruit for dessert and a bottle of Orange Juice. Sometimes we ate breakfast late ie. (9:30-10:30am) so then we didn't each lunch until sometimes (2:30pm-3:30pm) and weren't that hungry for dinner (7:00pm). The snacks were wonderful because it was easy to find an icecream stand or small snack area and pick up a drink or icecream or something. We did save money but like I said, it was too much food for us overall. Especially when you are eating a dessert with counter service and a dessert with dinner. Also at dinner it was often too much to have an appitizer, dinner, and dessert. Due to some of the dinner decisions or non-decisions we had an extra dinner left-over so we used it to eat breakfast at Boatwrights on the morning we flew out. We had an appitizer (strawberries & cream), entree (eggs benedict), dessert (smoothie), plus a drink (Orange Juice). I decided to pass on the smoothie because I was too stuffed after the eggs.

A few tips:

1. If you are eating lunch and you want icecream as dessert, you can ask the employee at the cash till if you can come back to get your dessert. They will let you do that (they let us at Port Orleans). BTW, the cookie icecream sandwiches are considered a dessert and are the size of your face!

2. Dining reservations are nice to have between 7:00pm - 8:00pm depending on the time of the fireworks and which fireworks show you want to see. Ohana's is a great place to see wishes! They even pump the sound in from the fireworks show into the restaurant!

3. Share counter service for breakfast with someone. It is plenty for two people.

4. If you can't get your dining reservations by phone try your consierge when you check into the hotel.

5. Eat at Canada (Le Cellier)

Hope this helps some!

Thank you for posting the great review. I have Le Cellier planned for our last night but I may have to "sneak" another earlier trip when I get down to Florida! :goodvibes
thanks for the good tips! Glad you enjoyed the trip.

Great reviews and great tips! Thanks for sharing with us. :goodvibes

kitty2kidz,

There was a bit of change in the food, but only minor. There were au gratin potatoes served with the meal which wasn't there before, one of the dipping sauces for the meat was different (I think). The entertainment was a gentleman playing the uklele and I know the kids were doing a hula hoop contest and some game involving brooms and coconuts. We sat closer to the restroom the last time so we didn't see or hear very much that time. Hope that helps!

OMG! That line made me laugh so hard!! Thanks for the reviews & tips, we'll be eating around the World in a few weeks.

So how did you like POR? What section were you in? Were the buses crowded?

great reviews, we plan on sharing cs lunch and breakfast some days :)

Enjoyed reading your reviews ~ Thanx for posting.

StephMK,

This was the second time I stayed at Port Orleans Riverside. I really enjoy it there. This time we stayed in Alligator Bayou and the last time we stayed in Oak Manor. I requested to stay in Oak Manor or Magnnolia Terrace but there were no rooms available in either of those sections. Magnolia Terrace & Oak Manor seem to be the most central location. However, Alligator Bayou wasn't too bad in terms of location even though it seems a tiny bit further away from the dining area. We were very close to the North Bus Depot. It is nice to have boat transportation to Downtown Disney and to Pleasure Island from this resort. The buses weren't too full. In March when I went, after the fireworks display "Wishes" at Magic Kingdom, we had to wait for a bus for about an hour. This time after "Wishes" we waited in line for maybe 5 minutes and ended up getting on the second bus.

Alexa,

What time was your ADR at Ohana when you got to see Wishes from your table? We have a 6:50 reservation, which I'm thinking is too early for that.

Thanks,
Kristen

kristen17,

Our dining reservation was at 7:40pm and we got seated around 7:30ish. We were trying to eat slowly..... we were finishing our dessert when the fireworks started. I would say that if you are seated around 8:00pm, that would be absolutely be perfect. If I were you, I would try to change it and maybe request a seat by the window when you arrive that night for dinner. Hope this helps!

good info, still on the fence about the Dining plan for our Nov trip. evryone seems to be saying the same thing "Too Much Food!" if that's the case, do you think it was worth it? Or do you think that, had you not been on the plan you wouldn't have got as much food, therefore not spent what the plan cost? Does that make sense?

just wondering, because to me it almost seems like cutting coupons and saying you saved $20 at the grocery store, when in fact you probably bought a bunch of things that you wouldn't have normally bought, simply because you had a coupon.

decisions, decisions, decisions!

Thanks for posting the reaview. We leave in 2 days and I am definitely trying Le Cellier.

I totally understand your point of view. We paid for the dining plan in July and we did appreciate being able to try so many different restaurants....but would we have done this had we not been on the plan? No way! We usually eat breakfast in our room and have a late lunch and snack during the evening. So to us, yes, it was alot of food. Having paid for it, we felt like, in order to get a bang for our bucks we HAD to eat an appetizer, entrée and dessert everytime we had our meal.

The meal sharing idea is a good one IF you have someone willing to share.

Still debating on whether we will take it again next trip. DD wil be 10 and paying the adult price so that is a big factor to consider because she doesn't eat alot. May not be worth it to us. But if it were offered for free, then I would definitely take the offer and order what I really feel like eating(quantity wise). I definitely understand where you are coming from.

I have no regrets, the plan made me discover a bunch of new and delicious places( Ohana......YUMMY).

bonnick98,

I totally understand why you are debating about the Dining Plan. If you plan on eating 3 meals a day and buying the food at your resort and/or at a Theme Park I would say that on average per adult you would spend at least $35.00 - $40.00 USD per person per day. The breakfast as a counter service was big so we shared which was plenty plus a drink to share ($6 each), Lunch depending on what you eat and if you share with someone ($6-$13 each) ($6-8 if you share with drink or $10-$13 if you eat your own meal) and at least $20 per dinner per person including drinks. Snacks are between $2.50 - $3.50 each for a bottle of water or an ice-cream. What is also nice is that gratuities are included in the Dining Plan.

You will have to add up the costs of the Dining plan vs. your alternative plan and see what works best for you. Even if you pass on dessert or appitizers and different meals, it may still be worth it. You never know. The entrees for dinner alone (without appatizers or dessert or drinks) were as follows:

Le Cellier - $27
Alfredo's - $18.99
Boatwright's - $21.99 (I had ribs though)
Ohana's (don't choose your meal) - $23.99 (I think....or very close to it)
Cinderella's castle - $21.99

Hope this helps you out!

Great reviews! Thanks for posting. The dining plan does seem like a lot of food but hey you are on vacation - enjoy everything! Do the rooms at Oak Manor seem bigger than Alligator Bayou or are they the same?

Delilah Bleu,

In terms of Oak Manor and Alligator Bayou, the room size seems exactly the same. However, the decor is different. The room we had in Alligator Bayou had a more rustic feel. The beds looked like they were made out of logs, the duvet covers were a patchwork pattern and the frame around the mirror above the table was made out of twigs. The Oak Manor room we stayed in the last time was painted a pale yellow and the duvets were yellow with flowers. Hope this helps!

Great reviews! Does PORS have a concierge that helped you get reservations?? Thanks great.

TwingleMum,

Port Orleans had a consierge desk right across from the check-in counters. Usually there are 2-4 people at the consierge desk to help out with any questions on park tickets, dining, etc. . They were very helpful!
