Yes, you need to buy at least a one day ticket per person to get free dining. The good news is that, if you don't use the one day ticket, you can apply that ticket cost to your next AP renewal.

Yes, especially with the Values. The only thing now is we have 2 each of the one day passes! If you go again like we did with an AP with an offer (the free $500 gift card) you have to get the 1 day again, but it was worth it. NOw our APs are expired and I think the next trip will be in the spring with the AP code rec'd by my son, who still has a valid AP. We will use ours to get a new AP.
I guess I figured the price when we had to get the 1 day and knew I would spend more than the difference between the reg. rate for the room and the AP rate (28 per day) when we booked free dining. The 1 day pass, although paid for, was almost free when you calculated the cost of food in relation to the difference in room cost. As you get more expensive rooms, the free dining really isn't so cost effective (the 4/7 offer is)
For my upcoming trip in February ( my daughter and myself) I booked the 4/3 deal. I got two 8 day base tickets with this package. I had gotten a Disney Visa pin for 40% but the savings was only $9 if I booked that way and includes only one 8 day base ticket. Seemed silly not to get the extra ticket for only $9!!!!!
