For those with Kindles, here are some links to look for free/cheap books:

http://www.inkmesh.com/ -- this is an Ebook search engine to find free ebooks and compare ebook prices for the Kindle, iPhone, Nook, Sony Reader and more

If you don't have a Kindle, don't like Kindles, don't think Kindles are a good/valuable product, please don't tell me. I am only sharing this info because one of my facebook friends suggested I share this info here to help out the people who love their Kindle like I do

Do these only work on Kindles, or any type of e-reader?

Some of them are specific to the Kindle but others are any e-reader. For example, I specifically went to the Kindle's Randomize Me page but it isn't specific to Kindle. Pixle of Ink, however, is specific to Kindle. HTH.

Cool links! I knew about a few but you had several I didn't know about. Thanks a bunch!!

My pleasure. And something I forgot to mention -- for newbies like me (got my Kindle for Christmas), check back every day/every few days as free books are often available for very limited times. Sometimes they are available for a week or two but sometimes only a day or two. I've missed out on some I would've liked because I didn't check in often enough. Now I'm OCD about it :)

There is software that will convert a Kindle book to a Sony format or any other. I use Calibre on my Mac to manage my library, it will convert any format to a .mobi, which Kindle can read. I convert a lot of PDF's to .mobi and read them on my Kindle. I don't like how the Kindle handles PDF's.

Awesome! I have read on the Kindle boards about Calibre but not about software that converts the formats. Is Calibre the conversion software? I have another link I found that allows you to search for free books/compare prices by author, title, or keyword and it will come back regardless of e-reader (I recently found a book I wanted that was free but only on Sony so I didn't download it thinking I couldn't get it to convert because of the DRM) http://www.inkmesh.com. I thought is was useless to me but if I can convert other books to my Kindle....:scratchin

I dont believe this is true.

*You can't put books purchase from Amazon on your reader since they are using a proprietary format that only their reader can read. It's locked up with DRM - digital right management. Amazon owns Mobi and their Kindle cannot read DRM Mobi (that's how controlling they are). Calibre only can be use to change the extension of books that are DRM free.*

Calibre converts to and from EPUB, MOBI, FB2, LIT, LRF, PDB, PDF, PMLZ, RB, RTF, SNB, TRZ, TXT, ZIP. My Kindle is full of MOBI files that I converted in Calibre that work perfectly.

Some these formats are familiar, like PDF, TXT, ZIP, others not so much. I know that MOBI works with Kindle. Sony can read EPUB formats.

Here is a wikipedia link that has a chart of the various formats and readers about 3/4's of the way down the page. EReader Formats (W/F/S)

Reading Kevin's post - pretty sure he is right about books with DRM which are books purchased through Amazon, the original post was about free books and most of those don't have DRM so should be able to convert just fine.

I read the exact same post as Kevin which is why I didn't even try to download the before-mentioned book. However, I am now reading Calibre's FAQ which says:

What formats does calibre support conversion to/from?
calibre supports the conversion of many input formats to many output formats. It can convert every input format in the following list, to every output format.

Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC**, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT

Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, SNB, TCR, TXT

** PRC is a generic format, calibre supports PRC files with TextRead and MOBIBook headers

The Sony eReader uses EPUB as the input format and the output format is MOBI which like Revan said is a generic format the Kindle CAN read. I downloaded Calibre (free) and am looking forward to adding some more books from Inkmesh when I get home from work. Thanks Revan!

Thanks for the link
