Fraud or mystery on my credit card?

I checked my credit card balance over the phone with Tesco yesterday and there was a transaction for over £111 with an on-line gambling company that had nothing to do with us. The result is Tesco are going to look into it and I've cancelled my card and will have to wait for a new one to come. The lady on the phone told me it's possible it's innocent and someone has keyed in one digit incorrect and that is frightening because I thought the security code on the back of cards would stop any incorrection in keying in. This is the first time I've had experience of this sort of thing although I know it's quite common - just feel better 'talking' to someone, thanks for 'listening'. p.s. Tesco were very good with their customer service. :)

Oh grief hope it gets sorted.

My friend also has a Tesco card. They seem good. They rang her to check she still had the card when she bought a PC and a holiday in the same weekend :)

You're quite right - keying one digit incorrectly would not allow your credit card to be charged in error. Even if cards were numbered sequentially, the other information wouldn't tally (if it was 'innocent' the person would have used their own name and address).

Anyway, don't worry; you're not liable if your card has been used fraudulently (as long as you haven't been negligent) - the credit card company is.

When I saw your post I thought we had something similar but just yesterday on our statement we had two payments amounting to almost £500 payable to Tesco. Our bank said it was probably a wrong digit keyed in and are investigating it. What a pain having to cancel your card. Hope its sorted for you soon

In recent years we have had 3 instances of our credit/debit card details being used to buy things we had no knowledge of. The first time someone in England made purchases from DallasCowboys.com, and, more recently, our debit card details were used by someone with a London address to buy disco equipment from a dealer in Hartlepool! On top of all that someone else used the same card details around the same time to pay 2 congestion charges! As usual the transactions only came to light when we received our statements and noticed them on there. We eventually got the money (some £600 in total) credited back to us but there was the hassle of stopping cards and getting them replaced AND convincing the Woolwich that we weren't responsible for the transactions in the first place! :furious: One tip I would give to anyone who shops or banks online and who has Windows XP on their pc's, is to use the on-screen keyboard to enter any sensitive details using your mouse. It can be found in Start/All Programs/Accessories/Accessibility and is a very useful tool in helping to defeat keyloggers. Keylogging is where someone somehow puts spyware on your pc and that spyware records every keystroke you make on your keyboard, instantly telling the person on the other end everything they need to know about your accounts etc. Every click of a mouse is exactly the same as every other and there is no way of telling what information you are inputting by using this method, at least not yet! I'm pretty sure that it was keylogging which gave away our details and since we started using the on-screen keyboard there haven't been any more incidents. If you have XP then give it a go. :thumbsup2

using it now bit slow
but when putting credit delails i won't mind

Thats if I remember next time :crazy:

Thanks for that info Night-Train. :thumbsup2 We definately haven't been negligent in using our card we're very careful. Luckily I have another card I can use but DH only had the Tesco one, due to others recommending Nationwide for their exchange rate when abroad he's going to apply for one of theirs. It just goes to show it's advisable to have more than one. We decided to cancel the card that way if there were to be any further attempts at using it, it will be declined. Having to wait for a new one to be delivered is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

We had our switch card cloned in a cash mashine at our local Tesco we haven't used them since. Ive heard other tesco stores have had the same problem.

We've had this too but not with Tesco it was our 1st trip to orlando, when we got back we had an urgent letter from Argos saying that we had spent over £1500 in the 2 weeks that we were away Customer Services were very rude and accused us of misusing the card, eventually we were put through to the fraud investigation team who couldn't have been more helpful luckily i kept the part of the plane ticket to prove that we hadn't been in the country, we still don't kn ow to this day whether it has been sorted out or not a Argos cannot be bothered to let us know.
