Fort Wilerness Cabins Questions, Help!

I am doing a surprise, spur of the moment, father and son trip to WDW this weekend. i decided to book FW Cabins but have never stayed there before and now have lots of questions.

i see on WDW website they recommend renting a cart. i tried google mapping FW and see the entrance and campsites but don't seem to see the cabins. trying to figure out the relation/location of hte cabins from reception hall to the cabins. also, if i book a cart, is the pick up near reception hall? are there parking spots for carts located around the property so if we take a cart from our cabin over to catch the boat to MK, we are able to park in the proximity?

help,leaving this friday and now i'm confused

You don't need a cart and if you aren't planning on spending a lot of time at the resort, I wouldn't get one. There are internal buses that will take you wherever you want within Fort Wilderness.

If you do get a cart, you pick them up near the lobby. There are places throughout the resort to park them. You can take your cart to the marina and park it for the boat to the marina.

We were just there in June and absolutely loved it! Have a great trip!

Having a golf cart is fun, but not necessary. That being said, I have rented one before and loved having it. You can park it at the external bus stop, where you take the bus to parks. You can also park it near the boat launch to MK. Your cabin will have a driveway to park it in as well.

thanks for the info, this helps. we are arriving late Fri night, as in our plane lands at midnight...ugh. we are renting a car and driving stragiht to FW. Sat at 10am we have a fishing excursion booked for 2 hrs, so psyched. i didn' grow up with any outdoorsmanship skills and my son has been begging for years to go fishing. sad to say i can build a skyscraper but know nothing about fishing, so this is going to be some good bonding time. after that we plan to scoot over to MK for the rest of hte day/evening.

Sounds like a fun trip! Seeing you are renting a car, I would save the money and not rent a golf cart.

No, you can't take your car to park near the marina. There are no car parking spots there. The easiest way to get to the marina if you don't have a cart or a bike is to take the internal bus. They run quite regularly so it shouldn't be a problem.

The cabins are a great choice for a father son outdoors bonding. Nice and quiet at the end of the night after a day of stimulation overload. Try to take in the Chip N Dale campfire singalong. They sell Smore kits at the trading post.

I'll 2nd a cart is not necessary if you're spending most of your time in the parks. If you're spending a lot of time at campground activities a cart is nice to have.

The loops with the a cabin icon are were the cabins are. The cabins are closer to the entrance.

Absolutely rent a golf cart. There is nowhere you can drive your car on property and the resort is VERY spread out. They have internal buses that run loops around the property but with a cart you don't need to wait for them. I run 3-4 miles per day and I wouldn't have been happy without a cart -- for example getting to the Marina, Trail's End Restaurant, or even the Depot (gift shop) were all at least 2-3 miles away from our cabin. They do a really nice job of not having cabins on top of each other. As OP pointed out -- they are on "loops" and the resort is HUGE. The cart will get you everywhere in 5-10 minutes. There is a charging port on your cabin exterior wall and they are are multiple ports throughout the property such as at the marina. BTW, the boat from the Marina to MK is a really nice perk and a fun way for you and your son to get there. If you have time, I highly recommend taking your son on one of their 4 hour fishing excursions. It is all catch and release, but my nieces and I had a great time and my brother-in-law caught a 7.5# bass on the trip. He was thrilled the my sister and nieces used a photo of it and had a fiberglass mount made for him as a Christmas present.

You can't drive around FW in your car, but you can in a cart. You can use your car to get to the parks and other resorts. As I said before, I rented a cart and we were glad we did. We drove it around at night and enjoyed the lights and decorations that some people had up on their sites. We also used it to go to Hoop-Dee-Doo, Depot, OutPost, Marina, pools. I will say that the internal bus system is fine, but we used our cart every day. If you want to splurge, go for it! You will love the cart and I bet your son will too!

I've stayed at the cabins probably 15 or so times. You do not have to rent a golf cart to get around, but it's FUN! If you decide to rent one, you can rent them at the bike barn... on property at Ft. Wilderness. It's about $60for a daily rental. Yes, there are cart parking all over the grounds. You can also plug in the carts. You can take a bus to the boats to go to the MK or rent a golf cart and park it. To be honest, the only time we rent a cart is on our day off from the parks and we are spending the day at the campgrounds.

The cabins are in the first set of loops ... I like loop 2500, 2300. Close to the pool.

I wanted to ask... why are you renting a car? Disney has Magical Express for free. That way you could rent the golf cart.

our flight doesn't arrive till about midnight. we just flew to Disney over labor day weekend and the wait in line for check in and the bus at MCO for ME was longer than we cared for. so since we are flying in so late, i want the quickest time possible to get to FW and to bed.

Also, we are leaving sunday and i have found that for us, the 3hr time frame before departure that ME requires is not necessary. We will leave 90min before our flight so we can gain that extra hour+ in the park.

beside, the car rental for our stay is only $29 total from Fri night to Sun night, ridiculously cheap. and its a Taurus or Equal, not a compact car.

i expect this trip to be as magical as ever. DS is now 11, just bout 12.

When he was 4, almost 5, i took him for a father son trip just before baby brother was born as his last hurrah. that trip was the most magical time i have ever had with my son, even more so than my first trip to Disney.

This past summer has been a challenge to say the least, my work in MA has been crazy busy, we lived in a hotel 6 weeks while our house was renovated and i have worked7 days week all but 3 weeks during the summer. i've also been working on my CA venture as we are returning to SoCal soon.

it's taken its toll on me and the family. i need to reconnect with my son and i can't think of any better way than 1 on 1 time at WDW. We just went over Labor Day as a family but this past week i've seen that my son is in dire need of daddy only time as well as me. Some barriers have been built between us with the stress of this summer and he is at that age where everything starts changing. No better place to put worries behind and just have fun together than WDW IMHO.
