Looking for a really great foreign film.

We've seen and enjoyed:

The Full Monty
Greenfingers (recommended on the Flower and Garden Board)
Amelie (thanks, SSB!)
Trainspotting
Waking Ned

Not sure if these count, but we've also enjoyed Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells, and Chocolat

We were duped into renting a movie based on the description on the box, but it was horrible. I can't remember the name of it, but it's about some people in Holland (I think) who end up forming romantic relationships through an Italian language lesson. Looks like it was filmed with a budget of 50 Eruos and an old personal video camera. ;)

Thanks for your help! We're always looking for a good movie to rent. Hope there is enough fluff content in this post to make it through the Friday Fluff censor today! :)

La Vita è Bella! I love this movie. Its English title is "Life is Beautiful", and it is specatcular.

In 1930s Italy, a carefree Jewish book keeper named Guido starts a fairy tale life by courting and marrying a lovely woman from a nearby city. Guido and his wife have a son and live happily together until the occupation of Italy by German forces. In an attempt to hold his family together and help his son survive the horrors of a Jewish Concentration Camp, Guido imagines that the Holocaust is a game.

RUN LOLA RUN.

i LOVE this movie. :teeth:

another favorite of mine has always been Antonia's Line. :)

Oooh! Thanks so much, you guys! I wasn't sure if I should expect too many recommendations. :) I'm so glad I asked this question!

Keep 'em coming! :)

Babette's Feast,
Jean De Florette and the sequel Manon of the Spring,
Cinema Paradiso,
Tatie Danielle,
Like Water For Chocolate.

All of these are foreign-language. Get them with subtitles. :)

2 come to mind. OK, maybe 3.

"Hope and Glory" is about a family in England during WWII. I't s very funny and just a bit sad at times.

"Cross My Heart" is a French movie about a boy whos mom dies and he's all alone. His friends try to hide the mom's death so he won't get sent to an orphanage. Funny and sad at the same time.

Oh, Have you seen Au Revoir Les Enfants? I't s a classic!

Il Postino
Blue
City of Lost Children
I highly recommend Like Water for Chocolate. Great, great movie.

Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon
most Jackie Chan movies from Hong Kong
Iron Monkey

all from Asia

If you're looking for an "English" language foreign film, I'd highly recommend Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert" is HYSTERICAL! Bizzare, but hysterical.

I'm with oldkicker -
the first that came to mind are Babette's Feast (warning, must have food to eat while you watch) followed by Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon of the Spring. They are truly classic.

Hope and Glory and a My Life As A Dog are also great.

I'm with A&H's Mom about Priscilla, Queen of the desert. Great movie I just recently bought because I couldn't find it at the movie stores.

I love Autrailian and British comedies. How about Strictly Ballroom. Both of these movies have some shared actors.

Like Water for Chocolate is a gem also. Bravo runs it often and I watch it again and again. Beautiful movie.
