For those with a College Degree, what does your diploma say?

Hello all :goodvibes

I am a teacher at a court reporting school here in New York. We are an accredited New York State college and our students can either graduate with an AOS Degree (Associates in Occupational Science) or with a court reporting diploma.

I saw one of my students in a store last week and she complained about her diploma. I asked why? She stated that it doesn't say she graduated from the court reporting program, that it only says she has an AOS Degree; she said she felt like she got a cheap diploma from some phony college.
When I went to school last Wednesday I asked my boss about it. She stated that the diploma's absolutely had the words Associates in Occupational Studies in Court Reporting on it.

We went over to one of our administrative secretary's desk and she pulled out a copy of a diploma we gave out this year and no where on it did it state that the student graduated as a court reporter, only that the student had an AOS Degree. We were all wondering, why?

When I questioned the secretary again today about it today, to see what she learned in the past week, it seems that our president (whom I feel should not have been in charge of a court reporting school because she is a graphic artist  ) decided to change the diploma and omit the words Court Reporting.
The president, BTW, is leaving for another job this week.
Anyway, her underling does not want to change it. He is also not court reporter, he is a typing instructor.

So I posed the question to my students today and I asked, do you want your diploma to state what you graduated from this school with? They all said Yes.

In fact, one of my students stated that she has an AOS degree in Liberal Arts and that it clearly states that on her diploma.

I told my boss (who should be in charge of the school - she's a court reporter!) that I would be posting this thread. I also instructed my students to write a short letter stating they would like to have the old diploma's back stating they have their AOS in Court reporting.

So my question is,
What does your college diploma STATE on it? Is your profession listed on it?

Thanks:thumbsup2

yes. Mine says Bachelor of Science with a degree in Recreation Management.

Mine is from a Large State University in NC

My diploma simply says

University of Wyoming

Confers upon "Name"

Bachelor's of Science Degree

Journalism...

Then all the high-brow signatures and dates.

Mine just says Bachelor of Arts and Dh's says Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.

Neither one of our majors is listed on our diplomas. They are from two different schools in the University of WI system. :)

Mine just says

Bachelor of Business Administration

Even though it is techincally with a concentration in Management it doesn't state that on the diploma.

Mine says Master in Management Information Systems.

My son's diplomas from UGA were Bachelor of (in?) Accountancy and Master of Accountancy. Don't know why they use that instead of Accounting. :confused3

Mine says Bachelor of Arts and my majors. However, the University that I work at now does not list the majors on the diploma, just the degree - Associate of Science, etc...

In the world of higher education, either option is acceptable as "industry standard." This is because the actual diploma is typically nothing more than wall art :rotfl:

Proof of degree and program accomplishments (including major, etc...) are typically demonstrated on the official transcript and should be further explained (i.e. concentrations, special honors beyond graduation honors, etc...) on the resume.

In addition, most jobs that want to verify degrees will not accept a copy of a diploma but will instead contract with a degree verification company, similar to the ones that call/fax my office on a daily basis. At that time, we verify degree (Associates, Bachelors, etc...), major and graduation honors.

I am almost certain my undergrad simply states "Bachelor of Science" - I'm 99.9% positive. I always found it amusing since I know nothing about science and am really bad in it. ;)

My graduate degree says "Master of Divinity" on it, no specialization listed.

DH's undergrad just says "Bachelor of Business Administration"

I had to go look, no one in the professional world has ever asked to see my diploma.

It says:
Bachelor's of Arts
Journalism and Mass Communication

My major was PR, which isn't listed anywhere on the diploma.

I think DH's says business...he was a marketing major.

My major was "Psychology and Criminal Justice," but my diploma only says "Bachelor of Arts - Psychology." Which then made it difficult to find employment in the criminal justice field, as I don't have a degree that "says" CJ on it.

Mine says Bachelor of Music in Music History and Literature.

DH's undergrad says Bachelor of Science in Physics, but he really got a double in phsyics and computer science.

Really? With the apostrophe s?

undergrad I was an early childhood education major but my diploma only says Bachelor of Science, with no mention of education

grad diploma says Master of Education

Mine says Bachelor of Arts - LiberalStudies/Sociology
DH's says Bachelor of Science - Engineering Technology/Construction Management
Mom's masters says Master of Arts - Linguistics

I guess they are really specific at CSU Long Beach! LOL!

The way I see it, your diploma is the only actual proof you have that you received your degree in a specific area. It should be on there.

Your degree should be listed on your official transcript, along with the specific classes you completed to earn the degree. As an earlier poster said, many employers require an official transcript as proof your degree, not a copy of the diploma.

My undergrad degree does not list a major (it was History, BTW), but my graduate degree does. Both are from a large state university in the south.

Bachelor of Arts
Master of Library & Information Science

I think that in the case of undergraduate college education, it is better NOT to list a subject area, because most of the time those of us with liberal arts degrees don't end up working directly in that area. In the U.S., college is supposed to be about getting a well-rounded education, not completing a job training course. Licenses and transcripts (and later, job experience) will serve to identify exactly what you studied in situations where that matters.

A trade school is another case else entirely, IMO. It almost always *is* a job-training course, therefore the diploma should identify the field that you are qualified to enter.

Mine says Bachelor's of Science in Accounting. For any other major in the business school (marketing, management, economics, finance) they have a Bachelor's in Business Management. Also, if you had a minor in something in the Arts, you'd have Bachelor's of Arts in Accounting.
