Which is better, in your opinion, snow showers or wintry mix?

We are driving to Chicago over Christmas and the weather predictions for different cities on our route include snow showers and wintry mix. We don't get snow showers here but do get the wintry mix. And you know people here in Texas drive crazy when there's ice on the road.:rolleyes1

I live in the Frozen tundra of the Twin Cites. Snow is DEFINATELY better than wintery mix of freezing rain, ice, and snow.

Do not worry....people in Illinois will see your Texas plates on the way to Chicago and give you a very wide berth believing that you have NO idea how to drive in snow....let alone on ice. :)

Safe journey!

As an inhabitant of colder climates (the high here yesterday was 3 with a windchill of -25) I would prefer snow showers over a wintery mix. To me snow showers are brief periods of light snow. Nothing an inhabitant of colder climates can't handle with one hand tied behind their back! A wintery mix, on the other hand, is that awful sleet that is part rain, part snow, part ice and mostly nastiness whether you're trying to walk or drive in/on it. :scared: Not even we inhabitants of colder climates want to endure that stuff! ;) Have a safe journey.

Snow, definitely. Don't worry too much about the driving. When you get furthur north, they will be pretty good about clearing the roads, and really all you need to know about winter driving is to SLOW DOWN. You'll be fine. Have a nice and safe trip.

Another vote for snow. Snow can be pushed out of the way. There isn't much you can do about ice other than do your darndest to get it to melt.

Drove home in a "wintry mix" last night. Took more than twice the regular driving time. Had to stop once to knock ice off my wipers when they couldn't clear my windshield anymore.

Definitely prefer snow.

Another Twin Cities frozen person... I agree, snow is the better choice. Our recent snow, warm up, freeze cycle with some drizzle thrown in was NOT a good mix. A nice slow snow shower.. ahhh much better. :thumbsup2

:lmao: :thumbsup2 Then again...I'm not sure those of us from IL know how to drive in snow either. Yesterday was the first *really* big snowfall in a while. 4 hour commute time on the tollways is a bit much even for US (that's what the radio said). Thankfully, almost everything I had to go to got cancelled last night so I did my 20 mph on the roads and then stayed put once I got home for good.

I will take a basic snow *any* day over the wintery mix AND don't add any wind to it. That will just push me over the edge thinking becoming a snowbird sounds *really* good. ;)

I prefer snow showers. We just had a wintry mix and the roads are covered in a nasty icy mix. Walking into work today I almost fell about 3 times.

Definitely snow! Just make sure you slow down and increase your stopping distance. Watch the bridges and overpasses as they will freeze first. Have a safe trip!

After dealing with a wintery mix last night and this morning, GIVE ME SNOW, any day.

My rule is to never do wintry mix once the sun STARTS to go down... if I was traveling I'd stop and get a hotel even with the best tires in the world and a salted road (FYI- salt doesn't work if it doesn't go down when its warm enough outside to melt the ice)
We definately plan on stopping at a hotel by 6:00 pm. Don't want to press our luck! I'm keeping an eye on the weather predictions on weather.com and they change a little daily. Praying for sunny weather on our travel days. Though we wouldn't mind some snow once we arrive. We don't get a lot of that down here too often.

Thanks for the good wishes!

I've lived in Cleveland my entire life and have never heard of "wintry mix." Doesn't mean that doesn't exist or that other people don't use the term, I just never heard it.

Snow sucks, but it sucks worse when it cakes to the ground and sucks even more when it cakes to the ground with lots of ice.

There are all different kinds of snow and some are harder to drive on than others. But you need to slow the hell down on all of it. If you have an SUV with 4-wheel drive, use the 4-wheel. Helps a great deal.

Just go slow. And if you have little experience driving on snow, go even slower.

And check your tires before you leave. If you have those nice, cheap southern tires that aren't made for snow, get some new tires or rent a car with good ones. You don't want to drive on the snow with tires that aren't made for that. Really.

And don't forget to slow down!!!

Good luck!

I agree, get a vehicle with 4-wheel drive, just remember it helps you get going but doesn't do much for stopping so give yourself extra room between the car in front of you or when coming to a stop signal.

Today's weather is defined as "wintry mix" Lovely isn't it?
Dick Goddard is a fan of the term.
