Hi,

I'm hoping for some advice about the time difference with kids. I thought about posting on the transportation board, but I want info from people with young kids. My kids will be 7, 5, and 2 when we go to Disney this Dec., and I wonder how long it will take for them to get used to the time difference, and in particular, if we will need to "sleep in" our first morning.

From Oregon, we will have to get a VERY early (5:30 or 6 am) flight to start our travel day. I have heard that's a good thing actually, because by the time we arrive at Disney around 5 or 6 pm, they will be tired, and ready to go to bed at their normal time of 7 pm (but on Orlando time). In other words, they won't want to be up until 10 pm Orlando time, since that will feel like 7 pm to them. Their early morning will make them tired enough to adjust to the new bedtime right away. We plan to eat a quick dinner in the Riverside Mill and look around, then go to bed (staying at POR).

If that works, I don't think they'll need to sleep in extra in the morning, and we can plan a park day, and get up in time for opening (my kids are normally very early risers anyway). Do you think that will work, or should I plan on the kids sleeping in (they usually are up by 6 am at home, so potentially could sleep until 9 am that first morning if they weren't adjusted). :goodvibes

Does that make sense?! We have no choice but to take the early am flight, so that's set. I'm wondering what other families have experienced. Luckily we have another trip to the East Coast this summer, and will have to take an early flight for that, so I can "experiment" with my idea then! ;)

I think your early flight idea will definitely work in your favor. :thumbsup2 Every time we need to change time zones or DST, we start a week early so that we can slowly adjust kids sleeping time. I'm solar powered and so excited about Disney that I just get up in the morning at WDW, no problem. DH gets up so early for work, I think he's immune to our WDW early morning schedule. My kids, however, are sensitive to time changes even just one time zone or DST so we have to ease into it. You know your kids and what might work. Have fun and don't get too exhausted yourselves :p

We are from Vancouver, WA so we are neighbors! We are traveling in June with a 3 & 4 year old. We decided to take the red-eye. We will get into Orlando at 10:30 am which is 7:30 PST. This should work out pretty good for us. And, their day will distrubuted and busy enough from travel etc. that I"m hoping they will go to bed early and get up early. They are normally very early risers too.

It will be interesting! I'm worried about nap times!

While living in So. Ca., we took our DD to WDW 3 times and our DS 1 time. They did not have an issue with the time change. It was I who had a problem losing those three hours. One year when my DD was about 2 years old, we flew out to Orlando on Daylight Savings Day --- we lost 4 hours!! That was brutal!! DD was fine. I was a mess!!

We usually schedule our first day to be a casual day -- shopping, relaxing at the pool, etc. Nothing heavy duty. This helps!

Good luck!
