We will leave DL on a Saturday and travel to Palm Springs. If I've driven from the Atlantic, I want my children to stick their feet in the Pacific before heading away from the coast. Which beach is easiest to visit for a few hours when leaving DL before heading to Palm Springs?

Also, PS looks fairly close to Anaheim. How long on a Saturday afternoon should I expect for the drive to the Palm Springs area?

The closest beach would be Newport Beach -- allow an hour to get there because traffic can be heavy on the weekends.

Palm Springs is about 95 miles from Disneyland, and I would allow 2 hours to drive there on a Saturday. If you are leaving from Newport Beach, allow 2.5 to 3 hours to get to Palm Springs.

You're going to be going in totally opposite directions to head to a beach first before going to Palm Springs, just be aware of that. You are looking at 2 hour drive from the beach to PS, and that's without traffic. It's about 100 miles.

Probably the closest decent beach area would be Huntington Beach, which is pretty much directly southwest from Anaheim. It's about 20 miles away and you could get there in 30 minutes or so on a Saturday morning.

Good luck! :)

<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font color=navy>I second Newport Beach - it's nice, and there are some good places to eat.

When traffic is not bad, the drive isn't an hour (but I'd have to try it again to check the distance/time).

We stayed in Newport Beach in November 2002 and drove to Disneyland on a Sunday afternoon. It took us 25 minutes to get to the Mickey and Friends parking structure.

From Disneyland take I-5 South. Exit at Jamboree and head West. Jamboree will take you all the way to Balboa Island. You can then take a ferry across the bay to Balboa Peninsula and the Fun Zone. On the opposite side of the peninsula is the Pacific Ocean. (The peninsula at this point is only about 4 blocks wide.) The wait for the ferry will vary depending upon your time of travel.

In Newport Beach you can rent bikes and boogie boards. At the end of the pier is Rubys Diner.

Is the ferry a car ferry? I'm thinking this isn't like Virginia Beach where the streets just end and Voila...there's the ocean. I guess I can't complain about one hour when I've already driven something like 50!

So give it to me.....how hot is Palm Springs going to be the end of June? It would sure se easier just to leave DL after lunch Saturday and head in the right direction to PS, but they likely won't get in the Pacific again for a long time. We really are going from sea to shining sea, and everything in between!

Palm Springs at the end of June will be HOT...but as the locals say - "It's a dry heat" Expect 100+ in the shade...evening temps in the upper 70s...it takes a while for it to cool down - you won't need a sweater.

Sounds like you're going to have a wonderful adventure! Enjoy your time in California!

My sister lives in Huntington beach and it is 10 minutes from DL. There is a pier in the main shopping area of Huntington Beach that is just great. You can swim and watch the surfers. We had a blast the last time we were there. We are going back next Jan to see her and it will be our first time staying at DL. I have been going there since I was 5 and have always wanted to stay there. This will be my 10th trip.

I hope you have a great time.
