we checked in to a 2-bedroom in April, on a Saturday. This was the Sat. after Easter Sunday. The first day was a cash reservation, so we should have been able to check in at three. We were actually early for that, but hoping for the best, but knowing it probably wouldn't be ready, and the cm at the desk said it was almost ready, to check back in an hour. So we went to eat at Olivia's, and came back in an hour. It still wasn't ready - so we decided to just come back after 3. After 3 it still wasn't ready, but the gave us the card to call the number. It wasn't finally ready until after 4.

The bad thing was, the room wasn't very clean. It was just generally nasty - everything from hand prints on the refrigerator to dust bunnies to paper under the bed to hair balls on the bathroom floor, etc. The front desk said the resort was all booked up. We ended up cleaning up a lot ourselves. We were a little tired and grumpy by then and made a quick trip to crossroads for some cleaning supplies. We went and talked to the desk about it the next morning - I figured that since the first night was cash, we should get another full cleaning that day or a new villa, to begin the week's stay on points. That just seemed legitimate to me. The maid came later, and we felt good about it - she was the regular maid at that villa, but had Saturday off, and they had brought in clean up folks from another resort. I guess they had a bad day on Saturday staffing, which probably accounted for the late check-in, too. She did a wonderful job, and the villa was much nicer and cleaner.

3 times in a row I had to wait until 4, but the other 13 times I did not.

Me too! Good so I'll expect to get in before 4 next time. ;)

We've stayed at OKW twice:

1st time - Two Bedroom - September - Arrived around 1pm and room was ready.

2nd time - One Bedroom - January - Arrived around 9-9:30am and room was ready.

Our only request was Non Smoking. Both times we were on an upper floor.

I stayed once at OKW a few years ago, and I didn't get my room til 4:01. The check in CM told me 60 minutes, then another 60, until I cam back at 3:30, not ready, 3:45 not ready, 4:01 a miracle its ready! It was my first DVC experience and I was not impressed. I guess I've always been lucky upon check-in at a "regular" resort!

My answer is Yes and No.

OKW is my home and I've stayed in both studios and one-bedrooms several times and during different months (February, May, October, December). Most often I can get the room before 4pm and I often check-in on a Sunday. A few times I've had to wait until 4pm though.

A word of warning, for those waiting for my room after I've left - You won't get it until after the official check-out time. I do leave it clean though so turn around time depends on the staff at that point.

DVC sells enough points that every single room could be booked every night of the year--aside from the points they keep in inventory for maintenance purposes, cash ressies, trades, etc.

But the assumption should always be 100% occupancy. With a large resort like OKW, odds seem to be greater that a room may not have been booked the night before, thus allowing an early occupancy.

The unfortunate reality is that housekeeping needs to those hours between 11am and 4pm to clean and restock the rooms, address any maintenance concerns, etc.

IMO, the biggest mistake here would be CMs that give false hope to people waiting for their room. If it's going to be 4pm before the room is ready, don't tell them 2pm...then 3pm....then 3:30...then 4pm.

We went in January & Feburary this year, both times we were in our room by 9AM one trip was a studio which is not a lot of time for housekeeping to do, but the second visit was a one bedroom!

Last Dec we arrived and checked in our room was ready within 15 minutes of check in

In a dozen trips every time.
Only once was it not ready when I arrived at 11am but was ready by 1pm

Well, I must just be "unlucky", but I have never been able to get into my 2 BR at OKW before 4pm on any if my 5 check-ins...December, February, March, and June! Always at 4pm or after.

This past February, when I checked in at 1PM, I was told to keep calling back in 1/2 hour, that the room was almost ready; but it was not ready until after 4 PM. The room was great, and just what I had requested.

Thanks for all your replies. It looks like we have a pretty good chance of getting our room but just in case I'm bringing a change of clothes for everyone so we can just get out there and hit the parks!!

I suspect the time of year of travel has a lot to do with this. We have had MANY trips to OKW and sometimes we get in early and sometimes not. Once we even had to wait until 5 because the folks before us made such a horrible mess, they needed to shampoo carpets and everything. Even at that, the carpet was still damp when we went in at 5:30.

We were at OKW from 6/30-7/7. We arrived around 12:30 and checked right in. They had a one bedroom overlooking a quiet pool that we got right into. The only thing that I would like next time is the unit with two entrances to the bathroom. Other wise we just loved it there. In fact we just got word that Disney passed on ROFR and we will be members soon.:Pinkbounc :bounce:
